We don't need chavs like your mate at The Etihad. Hopefully he gets a lifelong ban.

So you are against homophobia, but are happy to use the word "chav"...

Not sure what your point is my friend ? Would you care to elaborate ?

I suspect that there may be some facts missing from the op opening statement

Sure. I think using a word like "chav" is a form of "social racism" or "classism" that is not too dissimilar to other forms of stereotyping and discrimination. Whereas racism, sexism, homophobia is thankfully by and large not acceptable anymore, making fun of the poor seems to be ok. Of course "chav" is not the same than "poor" or "working class", but I think it stands for a form of modern snobbery. What do you reckon? Does that make sense?

I absolutely understand the opinion but whereas folk don't have a choice about their race, sexuality etc. they do have a choice re: their behaviour.

I agree with you in a way, but as the term 'chav' has no clear definition and is open to interpretation, he can easily worm his way out of this one.

I think you're talking out of your arse.

'Chav' originally meant 'working class chic' but like language often does, it has evolved into a word that is used to describe low life scum.
Considering most of the people who now use the term 'chav' are working class people themselves, I don't really see your point.

I prefer the word scroate to chav. But, my understanding of the word is the same and it applies to anyone of any class, basically it's all about ones attitude and actions to others.

(If the flappers see me as a scroate, I'm cool with that.)

Am not sayin you are wrong, cos you aint, but when I saw that the OED had given that definition I thought it wasn't good enough. It correctly fits how some people use the word, but it doesn't fit - in my opinion - the majority use the word, i.e. broadly.
