Mathematics Problem

We made 3 phonecalls all to no avail and the first response came on tuesday morning by which time we could have spent 3 nights in the nearby hotel.

Fortunately I had my code breaking skills in tip top condition.

I did consider that but unfortunately the house didn't have one ;)
 
Well, you can examine the keypad very closely. You will see that some of the numbers will be more worn than the others, which means that they are your four digits numbers.

Failing that, and if you have to go for the long way round, I'd do default sequencing then alternative sequencing.

Default sequencing would be to try ones that are defaulted to the safe. 1234, 0000, 1111, 9999, etc.

Failing that, as a last resort, alternative sequencing would have been the quickest way. try 0001 then 1000. 0002 then 2000. Although mathematically, the probabilities are the same, logically, you can start from middle range then move out.

That's how I would have done it anyway, or am I not thinking this through properly?
 
if you'd not been given any code, I'd try 0000, 1111, 2222, 3333 .... 9999, 1234, 5678, 9876

but if you have been given a code, that suggests it's unique. let's assume they know that the code should be random, all you can do is reverse engineer common mistakes; change the ones to sevens, sixes to fives, threes to eights (and vice versa). alternate the order of the digits. then change one digit at a time, instead of abcd, replace a with 0 to 9, then b, c, d. (it's only fourty attempts and it's saved my bacon on more than one occasion)

but presumably security is weak, and it was a variation on the room number or the ddmm of your arrival
