Matheus Cunha

Quite surprised by the links to the other Matheus (Nunes), as I think Cunha has played better of the two to start the season and also has the attributes needed to play as an 8 in Pep’s system (along with playing as a hold up 10, which would benefit Erling in certain matches). He is also nearly a year younger.

But perhaps we’re looking for more flair than strength and press resistance?

Cunha is a striker.

We are after a midfield player.

He is an attacking midfielder, who I maintain is better as an 8 (and who has effectively played as one in the first few matches of the season for Wolves, and excelled in the role).

Most of the games he's played for Wolves, he's played in a 2 up top or from the left in a 3 up top.

We need another midfielder in the door that can ideally play as a 6 and an 8.

Rodri needs more cover if Kalvin goes.

As good as Eze?

As it looks as were in balls deep for two players, and Wolves even in a serious financial situation are not going to let go of their two best players in one go.

He has recently being played as a hold-up 10, also dropping back in to midfield to receive the ball and retain possession, which he has done very well.

As I have said many times, I don’t think he is actually a forward (at least not in the PL), but rather a strong, press resistant 8, that can also drift forward in to a hold-up 10.

And that is exactly the sort of player we need after losing Ilkay.

I think he is different to Eze but, based on performances and fit to what I personally think we need, he is better than Nunes.

That’s not to say Pep won’t make Nunes a very good player — I have no doubt of that. But, like with Tommy Doyle, I see an excellent player in Cunha under Pep that could help to reduce the workload on Rodri.

I’d prefer us to keep Doyle and have Pep mould him in to our new Ilkay (he has all the attributes to fill that role), but it seems the club feel he needs to play regularly to progress.

I would change that mindset personally. Don't think hardly any players place is guaranteed atm. That's why we are in position we are in now - missed sorting it out last summer massively sitting on our hands once too many . . .
He's a striker and we only play with 1 striker who happens to be the deadliest on the planet.
Maybe we could have gone for him instead of marmoush but too late for that now

Very talented.

Great technique, good in tight spaces. Just not sure if he's consistent enough, nor if he works hard enough off the ball (because I don't watch Wolves enough to know).

What profile of player does he fill?

Isnt he more of a backup to Marmoush?

Im not sure we need that, neither can really do the striker role.

I think the squad misses that focal point striker when Haaland is missing.

Surely there must be someone, around 30, acceptinf of a backup role, who is fairly decent and tall, that can play striker?

Heck, wouldnt mind if O Reilly just did it.
