Matheus Nunes

I was surprised how much ground he made up for Real's second the other night. Ended up being an inch or two away from making the tackle of the season against a player who is renowned for his pace and had a big head start on him.

He's not actually that slow, he wouldn't be able to play the position on his own if he was.

Early on he had a habit of pushing too high and getting caught way ahead of the ball which left him 20+ yards behind counterattacks and people misrepresented this as being slow until it just became a fact that got repeated mindlessly.

He's not quick, but he's no Gareth Barry.

Maybe I’m wrong then, I just remember Harry Kane waltzing past him with ease in one game.

I think he’s one of the best defensive midfielders in the game but it would be nice to have a more combative alternative in the squad. Bissouma would be good.

Not particularly quick and more CM than DM. I’m still skeptical of these links frankly
Gus, are you skeptical of the links as in sources or of the player himself?...because if its the player himself I have to disagree with you...he has loads of ability and Pep loves him...DMs don't have to always be Casemiro types...the best deep lying midfielder playing in front of the back 4 and linking up play with the front 5 I have ever seen play is Andrea Pirlo and he's nothing like a Casemiro....I'm not comparing Nunes to Pirlo by any means, but I'm making the point that under Pep's system that type of player could flourish...jmo

This is nail on the head for me. Everyone had Gundo down as a dm and he became a more forward thinking cm for us.

Pep also turned kdb and Dave Silver into 6s for the 100 points season, not to mention Bernardo being a rw and now comfortable beside Rodri in a 6 role vs Liverpool and Madrid recently.

The player can't be pigeonholed if they join us because they will invariably play a new or differing role. See also Grealish.

I believe Bissouma is still under investigation for sexual assault so I'd be astonished if we go anywhere near him.

Point taken, though. I'm not sure I agree with it but we will definitely need a reinforcement there in the summer, unless Pep ends up magically converting someone.

I am a supporter of Sporting and I can tell you that Matheus Nunes has all the qualities to play for City. For me Matheus Nunes is a pure 8. He has already played 6 with Sporting in his debut but with his abilities it would be a waste to make him play 6: Speed, Technique, Endurance, manages the opposing pressure very well.
The only way I see him playing for City would be if Guardiola takes Gundo down to 6 and Matheus Nunes takes his place.

Exactly, what I said before: a CM, not a DM. And using Gundogan as a 6 reserve would be a stupid idea imo. Best to get a real DM. Nunes could come if we’re also looking for an 8, but I am not sure these links are reliable at all. (A note for certain posters: Nunes was born in Brazil…)

It's that initial acceleration that Rodri lacks. But he has a lot of leg to shift and can still get a foot in. I think the DM role has become dominated by small in stature players that buzz around and seem to be everywhere, but effectiveness isn't always then considered.

Kante is typical of this. Everyone's man of the match but he often has bad performances, they just get swept under the carpet until his next good one where everyone waxes lyrical again.
