Measuring "BIG" clubs

Liverpool are bigger than Chelsea and City. For us to be as big we would need to have a period of 20/25 years of League and Cup success.

You are correct that we will need a sustained period of success. Thankfully we are in the hands of owners who fully understand this.

In the years that come to pass and decades down the line, we will all be old men and will look back on these years, Talking to our grandchildren about when our 'new history' was formed and where it has taken us.

Just had a lad on my Facebook sayin ' massive game today, lets do um man u' . He then had to be informed by a female friend that the fane is actually Tomo. I tell ya what, I'd rather be in their shadow when it comes to fan numbers rather than having tossers like that becoming city fans.

United and Liverpool by far the biggest clubs, yes Liverpool havent won the league in the past 20 years but they have won plenty of trophies and have won the CL in the past 10 years.

Arsenal just below them.

Then I would have Villa, US, Chelsea, Spurs and Everton in the next group, All have big fanbases while us and Chelsea hadn't won a many trophies before our investment our current success imo makes us just as big as these clubs.

The next group is where we would stand if we hadnt been took over and thats with the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds etc.

except the rags and scousers won next to nowt before they splashed the cash to dominate so no difference between them and us either

we always felt bigger than most of the clubs you mention when I first started watching City and now we are back where we belong

there's more to be a ''big'' club than winning trophies but if that is used as the only measure then we are currently the biggest club in England seeing as we are the CHAMPIONS
Liverpool have United have both won 60 trophies in there history way more than any other club, Arsenal in third with just under 40. I would judge a big club in support and trophies. Liverpool and United are by far the biggest in those aspects.

Plus the Milans, Juventus and possibly Ajax.
My only issue with Juve is that though they have a famous name they have always attracted pitiful attendances..often below 20,000. They are followed by armchair fans across the whole of Italy. They would be in my second tier. Because of their exploits in the 70s Ajax are still a huge iconic club..bit like a smaller scale Liverpool

Ajax are every bit as big as the others you've mentioned but have been marginalised by UEFA bringing in the Champions League. I believe if we saw a change back to the old style European Cup, the true giants of the game would show themselves. Benfica, Ajax, Marseille and others who are pushed aside to pander to the countrys with the strongest leagues.

I agree about Juventus but think that support is different in Britain than anywhere else in Europe. There's never more than a thousand or two away fans at El Clasico.
600 Madrid fans at the last Camp Nou El Classico.

Liverpool try to portray themselves as if they're this huge club. Yet their stadium size, recent attendances, record attendances, income, name in other sports and youth development is nowhere near at the level of many of the other giants of this sport across Europe.

That's not a bad view on things. In this day and age, one might look at the value of the brand to determine a big club.

Liverpool like to go on about their 'istory but City won a European trophy before Liverpool and we still hold the record for the biggest crowd at a league ground.

Some good perspectives here let me throw another one at you.

Two of the people within my debate at work are Forest & Everton fans. They class themselves as bigger than city for various reasons such as European success and and history.

Forest always get way overrated in the "big" club debate. They've only ever won the league once in their history. Outside of the Clough years they really are a nothing team.

On a historical basis Everton are a big club, just behind Liverpool, the rags and Arsenal imo. Last trophy was 1995 though and they can only claim to be bigger than City these days based on history of trophies, nothing else.

I notice you get a lot of Spurs and Newcastle fans crowing that they're bigger than City as well, yet we've now won the league TWICE since either of them last did it.

Is it just me that doesn't understand the middle part of that post?
