Here is the opening paragraph of the Daily Telegraphs match report on Burnley v Liverpool...………

Liverpool march on, still unbeaten, still breathing down Manchester City's expensive collars and creating records as they go.

This is penniless Liverpool who have managed to get 11 part timers to continue this David v Goliath (or goodies v baddies) battle. Well done to them I say and well done to the DT for ensuring everyone is reminded we wear expensive collars.

What records are they creating?

I presume they are club records seen as we’re in 1st.... Most expensive team in 2nd place record.

I was going to tag in their records but I was laughing so much I couldn't type anymore.
Apparently the records they are creating is 12 wins and three draws is the best start to a season they have had. Now I make that one record where does the DT get records ? I presume the scousers were happy enough when they read it though

Well done Dippers you’ve broken your record which isn’t a record & nor is City’s start which is far superior.

What could possibly be the point in including that other than for the shameless 'feel good factor' incorrectly it seems to give Utd, Liverpool & Arsenal fans?

I don't remember these who / can we stop Manchester Utd articles being all the rage in the '90's?

Maybe just my selective memory...........

United were treated very differently back then, like royalty, there was the Premier League and there was Utd. It was peculiar because, as you know, the rags were hated by fans of all the other clubs. This was left unspoken of course and when, on the odd occasion this hatred came to the surface, in a phone in or whatever, it was instantly dismissed as jealousy.

Utd's pre-eminence was taken as a given, almost as if it were the natural order of things and if fans of other clubs didn't rally behind Utd on those glorious European nights it was spoken about as if it were akin to treachery. We were all supposed to put our petty allegiances aside and rally round the flag bearer of English football!

Utd were not like other clubs, their successes were our successes, even if we were too small minded to realise it.

It was also taken as a 'given' by Arsene Wenger & Arsenal imo, who became comfortable with the idea of 2nd place & thrown a few scraps from the table.

Chelsea & City ruined that.

You're right, Arsenal quickly settled for second place and a pat on the head, it was cringingly apt when this happened last season....
