It’s only contentious because it was our penalty. It would have been given the other way & described as a cast iron penalty.

It wasn’t a contentious decision.

It would have been a penalty in 1963. It’s a penalty in 2023 and it will still be a penalty in 2073.

You can’t throw yourself to block a shot with your arm outstretched and not expect it to be a penalty if it hits your hand.

Otherwise you would instruct your defenders to throw themselves in front of shots with arms outstretched because it can’t be penalty and you’d essentially have about five goalkeepers.

It’s not a contentious decision as such, everyone’s agreeing that as the law currently stands, it should be a penalty.

It’s just that everyone also agrees the law in its current state for handballs isn’t right. It’s always going to be difficult with “unnatural” positions but what they’re actually asking defenders to do with the current law is defend in an even more unnatural way.

It’s one of those where you’re happy if you get it and bloody annoyed if it goes against you.
