I was also there and I disagree with you on a couple of points. Firstly scoring away in the last ten minutes to simultaneously save yourselves and relegate another team instead, the team you’ve scored against, is about as good as it gets as a football fan, especially given the relative size of the two clubs then and the journey they’d been on through the divisions.

Disagree that we were crap, relatively speaking. We’d challenged for the league the previous season and I feel that was the best City team to be relegated since we were promoted in 1966, the 1996 team running them close. We’d been mid table when John Bond resigned in January. No one was talking of relegation then. Our decline and demise was unexpected and sudden and it never ceases to amaze me that John Benson always seems to get missed off worst City managers lists, as he was a complete fucking disaster.

So it was a huge result for Luton.

Don’t care what some bitter on the radio thinks. Illey broke the cunts and that’s why they are still crying.
John Bond resigned after a cup loss at Brighton which I had the misfortune to attend. Was the first outward sign of the rot setting in I would say.

I remember that night…..everybody sprinting to get back to the station….and once there it was how I imagined a war zone to look like…..lots of casualties…bloodied noses, black eyes etc.

Think it was about Oct/Nov 77
A couple of lads stabbed that night too as I recall.

I was there. Was that the one when we all got piss wet through, or was that the previous league game? Either way we got battered in both of them matches.

Date would be right, I’d have been about 15, exactly how I remember it Gaz. Coming out of the ground someone said Chelsea were waiting.
At that time all major northern teams playing in the London area were regarded as fair game for London mobs. Both ourselves and Wolves targeted before and after 74 league Cup final, got a right kicking that day. Could work the other way though, in 1970 Chelsea battered at Euston by a combined City and Liverpool mob after we played at the Bridge and Liverpool at Spurs. Also heard tales in the 80s of City and Leeds joining up in Euston, King's Cross area to take on cockney mobs. All I was interested in was getting on the train in one piece.
