My favourite exercise as a maths teacher many moons ago was to give the kids an exercise to workout the reading age for various newspapers. It goes by words per square centimetre and number of consonant etc. If I remember correctly The Sun and Mirror came to about 7yrs, The Times about 11yrs and the highest was The Finacial Times at about 14. It may come as something of a surprise to you but the average reading age of the general population is about 9.
'Financial'......

Whether someone who writes for a tabloid is more skilled than a journalist for a broadsheet is not something I'm qualified enough to comment on, but I do know for sure that anyone who chooses to be the former, if he has any discernible intelligence, must have something approaching zero level of self-respect.

I imagine if a tabloid is offering a considerably higher salary then self-respect goes out of the window. Same with most industries.

I think in most industries the differentials aren't nearly so stark. It's like comparing performing for the RSC with starring in a Steven Segal movie. Money isn't necessarily the be all and end all for everyone who is producing creative output for a wider audience. Self respect and professional pride will matter more than financial reward to plenty of journalists.

This is what happens when teachers are off for 13 weeks a year.

In a profession that is dying on its arse, I think you might be overestimating the importance of self respect and professional pride.

Naive. And wrong. If journalists were such a bunch of philanthropists, they'd all be writing for The Big Issue. Journalism is no different to any other profession. Money talks, bullshit walks. Read your last sentence. You don't really believe that do you? Because truth be told, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, it's utter bollocks.
