Manchester City’s predicament last week was deciding which was the lesser of two evils. They could join five of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and break away, or stay with Uefa after years of battles with Europe’s governing body.
The build-up to the launch of the European Super League would prove City are still outsiders among football giants. The hope they, and others, have is that the doomed project will now give others seats of power in the game.
City were late to the table when ESL clubs
were plotting the midweek competition that would see 'Founding Members' exempt from relegation. When the invitation was made they were in an unenviable position.
They knew how Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal felt about them from their involvement in the 'Hateful Eight', who wrote to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to ask for City to be banned for European football while
their case over Financial Fair Play was waiting to be heard.
The risk was missing out now and never being invited back. And the alternative was aligning themselves with Uefa, who they met in court last year to overturn their two-year ban in European competition.
If they did not break away City’s Abu Dhabi owners would have been in an unlikely partnership with Paris Saint-Germain’s Qataris. They would also be on the side of Bayern Munich, whose chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been a critic of City.
