If you pay everyone the living wage - which would be nice - surely then the cost of production goes up and thus the cost of the product until eventually the cost of the living wage needs to rise again.
And / or businesses utilise foreign labour as it is far cheaper meaning there are less jobs to pay said living wage.

I don't know what the answer is.........

Only if you assume the profit margin is untouchable.
 
True but people running the company should be rewarded for taking the responsibility - anyone can set their own business up but most choose not to.

Well lets remove the minimum wage entirely then and let them pay as little as they like to reward the business owners.

Why should they have to pay £9 an hour when anyone could set up their own business? Let them pay £3/hour. We've got 400,000 unemployed so plenty of competition for the jobs and the people running the company will feel so much more rewarded!

This is how it used to be until a few years ago (1st April 1999 - minimum wage law). Employers could pay what they wanted but the ones that paid the least would get the most unreliable workers so it paid to pay a bit more. Not saying it's right.
