One of the reasons that women's boxing got the go-ahead in the Olympics was because the standard achieved by women boxers (and Katie Taylor in particular - she was actually specifically mentioned in the report to the OCI) was deemed too high to ignore.
Her skill level is therefore undoubted. She has earned the right to be compared with anyone.

She actually changed the sport of boxing and the way people, expert and non-expert alike, view it.
Very few athletes can say that.
Now, if you didn't like the Sugar Ray comparison you won't like this one but there you go, sport is all about opinions:

In fact, by opening it up to half of the world's population, she has probably had the greatest impact on the sport of boxing since Ali... if not greater.
It was Taylor who made the Americans (in particular) sit up and take notice. Whatever you're in about, that's the fact of the matter.

As for keeping perspective:
You're not the only one in this conversation who has spent time in the ring/ gym.
You're only speaking to your own experience but posing it as fact.
You're allowing your biases to colour your considerations. Now don't get me wrong on this, your opinion of the IOC is possibly (probably, even) very accurate but with regard to what I said it's also wholly irrelevant. The IOC were threatening to cut boxing out of the Olympics altogether, if you remember. Instead, they expanded the event to include women. Whatever way you look at it - however erroneously you belittle her abilities (come on you must know it's chauvinistic nonsense to suggest (probably) the best female boxer in the world is a provincial level talent) - it was Taylor's ability that was cited and ultimately instrumental in changing the sport. Her ability was proposed and endorsed as indisputable - by experienced people within the sport.. Admittedly, they probably didn't train at your gym but their opinions might be worth regarding all the same.
Credit where it's due.

Anyway, back on topic: Come on City. :-)
