I don't know why people on this forum get hung up on the media. You need to understand one thing, the media does have a self-perpetuating agenda; but it's an agenda they rely on to survive and thrive. In my job I travel up and down the country regularly, within the last few years I've bumped into a dozen or so Liverpool fans. Not one of them was from Liverpool. I met one from South Wales, one from Newcastle (I mean for f***s sake come on!), think one was from Stoke-on-Trent. I've also met plenty of United fans who perhaps unsurprisingly weren't Mancunians. And do you know what was funny? All, to a man, told me they supported Liverpool/united because their Dad supported them, or their Grandad supported them, or their second uncle removed supported them; pretty strange that. The truth is; these are the glory-hunters, the day-trippers, the oh-I-don't-really-like-or-understand-football-so-I'll-just-pledge-allegiance-to-the-teams who-were-winning-more-at-the-time-ers.
But this brings me back to the media. The media will always pander to this aforementioned group because they comprise the majority. There are more "dyed in the wool reds" in this country than any other genuine support base, and the media have more to lose if the reds turn off/change channel than if City fans were to do the same. If their viewing/listening figures plummet, their revenues plummet. And then guess what? They're out of a job. Do you think the likes of Adrian Durham and Jake Humphrey turn up to their respective studios and say to their producers, "right, this is the angle I'm going with today"? Not a chance. They will be given a script of which they are to strictly adhere. The media also know its vogue to hate City; most of the hate coming from those "real reds", so they'll again do what's fashionable to keep those figures up. It's a similar scenario in Spain with Marca and Mundo Deportivo. One is pro-Madrid and one is pro-Barcelona; dictated purely by their location and target audiences.
And reassure yourself with this, the hate from other supporters stems from one thing and one thing only; jealousy. If the media are ever nice to us again start worrying, because that will mean we've slipped back to mediocrity and being 'ickle old city'. I only hope the hate amplifies over the next generation, because it means we'll have become an unstoppable force. And that, fellow blues, would be something to savour!
