And unless I've misunderstood the legal bit crediting us for the use of it, they've presumably sought permission from us to use the crest in the article, and we've seemingly agreed. I could be wrong of course, and it may be the case that they can freely use it as long as they do credit us.

Fairly sure they just have to credit us. In any case we've probably just given media outlets like fourfourtwo blanket permission for articles, doubt the club want to be granting permission 10,000 times a day to every newspaper, website, TV channel and magazine that wants to use the crest.
