If state owned City blew money like barca we'd be struggling too ;)

It's just deflection shite, he knows he's fucked them up possibly preeminently, killed a golden goose and he's pulled that many levers he could work as a railway signalman.
Tbf, was not Laporta that fucked them up but the two presidents that came after his first stint, at least one of whom will find himself in gaol.

Iirc he took a big/lucky punt in his first period there with the buck toothed midfielder which paid off.

His current spell hasn't gone too well, things weren't good but instead of managing expectations to get finances under control he's gone the other way and put them in a position which could take years and years to sort out.

is the english media having long articles on potential punishments for Barca if these referee charges are true?
like point deduction, sending them to lower league, trophies taken away etc.

you know the articles like with City, detailing (or more like hoping for) various punishments for the fake charges by the PL.

They were effectively bankrupt at the start of his current stint.
There is a rule in Spain requiring a bankrupt club to find a buyer with the price determined by a fixed formula.
Hence the financial levers strategy to avoid a sale. The key element is the selling of future tv income which brings in cash.
He also secured players’ agreement to reduce wages, although in many cases this was by deferment leading to future liability. Of course he also sold Messi securing a big reduction in their wage bill.
