Well I'm only 69 so not as old as you by the sound of it

The Chron ended in '63 and I'm far more familiar with the Pink, and it was delivered to our local newsagent at about 6pm on a Saturday night for most of the 60's
I'm a bit older 81, but you must have done your research on the reply

I am pretty sure that Peter Gardiner was not the Evening News City correspondent back then. Was it not Eric Thornton at that stage?

Yes, it was Eric Thornton for ages. I think it was Alf Clarke covered United - he was killed at Munich in 58, if I recall right.

Eric Todd was in the Chron.

Correction - Alf Clarke worked for the Chron, and Tom Jackson covered Utd for the Evening News.

Both died in the Munich crash. (As of course did my namesake)

Apologies for any confusion, I didn't mean Peter was the correspondent in '63, I was responding to the original post re Peter writing about United, albeit that no date was quoted. I said that Peter wrote about City, United was David Meek.

You are correct, Eric was the writer in '63.

By the way, I have a '69 book written by Eric - Meredith to Mercer and the FA Cup which I bought at the time.

My understanding is that "Buy Out" clauses are illegal in the UK (i.e. player buys out his own contract to leave). Probably the best recent example of this was Neymar from Barca to PSG. Legally he paid the £222M himself... that PSG had given him that money is irrelevant. This is what is mandatory in Spain.

A "Release" clause (i.e. buying club meets a certain contractually agreed selling price) is allowed.

The two types are completely different.
In what way is it illegal or contrary to UK contract law?

"One major issue with the buy-out clause is the belief that this type of clause would be unenforceable in the English courts. In English law, though the courts have allowed parties to pre-agree damages for a breach of contract, they have taken it upon themselves to limit the use of penalty clauses. The English courts have generally held that a clause imposing the obligation on the defaulting party to pay an extravagant sum for the breach of contract is a penalty clause and hence is void and unenforceable."

Several years old though, so may have changed to be honest & unlike you, I believe, I'm not an expert in the law. :-)

when did the teleprinter begin on Saturday afternoons ?

And it's live !
It was originally called the teleprinter and I think it began fairly soon after Grandstand began in the late 50’s. The Press Association used to have a rep at every ground and they phoned the results in, which then appeared, like magic.
The BBC then collated them and gave rise to the ‘classified results’ being read out by 5 o’clock.
Interestingly, only 3 men have read the results on grandstand since it began.
I rarely got to see it as a kid though as my dad was a World of Sport man, as he loved the wrestling, for some reason!
