Meeting Re: Atmosphere

City fans could help spur on the team to Champions League glory against Villarreal with the entire South Stand being designated a ‘Singing Section’ for this game.

Away fans will be relocated to East Level Three for this match in response to fan feedback about the possible benefit to the match day atmosphere of a unified singing section behind the goal. This trial, which is likely to be repeated later in the season, will assess the appetite of fans’ seated in other parts of the ground to move into this area, as well as judging the impact on supporters in tier three of the East Stand, safety considerations and queuing times.

Commenting on the trial, Steve Sayer, City’s Operations Director, said:
“The South Stand is hugely influential on the overall atmosphere in the Stadium on a match day and we share the fans’ desire to test whether moving the away fans can create an even greater impact. On a big European night, such as our UEFA Cup quarter final against Hamburg a few years ago, the atmosphere was unparalleled and we believe that noise and passion can make a big difference to the players out on the pitch.

“We are expecting a relatively low number of away fans at this fixture, making our second home Champions League game the ideal opportunity to test our home fans’ wish to sit in a unified singing section whilst creating minimum disruption to other fans in East Level Three.”

Tickets details and relocation details for the Villarreal game on Tuesday 18th October will be announced shortly. Supporters on the Champions League Cup Scheme in blocks 308 and 309 who are impacted by this change will be contacted by the club regarding relocation of their seat.

People will moan about this.

Make it £2 (or buy one get one free) on pints before 2pm. City are then pocketing the money rather than pubs outside te ground. It also gets people pissed - more likely to sing, and gets you in the ground early rather than at 2.55pm.

Ha ha, that's exactly thew reason City won't be doing it !!

Good to see the club taking notice of what the singing section would like. On the other hand i feel for it to be tested properly it needs to be done over a period of games rather than the 2 mentioned. Definately a step in the right direction

These two games are being used as a trial, with a view to it becoming permanent next season. I think the club are keen to gauge opinion, as making it a permanent measure will obviously be expensive and logistically difficult. It's good they are listening to the fans though.

Would be great if we can make a success of it at the Villareal game, as I think having the South Stand full of City fans will only help the atmosphere and thus the team.

There's plans afoot for a mosaic in the South Stand before the game, with flags & ticker tape etc. Hopefully it'll be a visually impressive spectacle. Just needs the vocal supporters to relocate (if necessary) for this game.

Is it dafe to assume it will be standing?

I think officially the club probably won't comment on that, but reading between the lines I think they'll take a relaxed approach to standing in there.

It's a dodgy one moving fans up to the 3rd tier though as half of our atmosphere comes from 'banter' (hate that word) with the opposing fans.

What's with the reference to Hamburg!?!? For the Hamburg game, the South Standers were spread out all over the stadium. The exact opposite of what they're doing for Villareal.

The problem is they're putting ALL the singers in one end to generate atmosphere. It certainly generates atmosphere at that end, but if you put singers all over the stadium, with the hardcore at one end, that works best, as it generates atmosphere all over the place.

As someone pointed out, you need chants to cascade around a stadium from one starting point. That starting point can be anywhere. It should be everywhere.

Most people do want to sing, no matter what their age, they just want to sing a catchy song with words that they can learn in 10 seconds and don't want to sound stupid by singing on their own.

So the obvious answer, surely, is to have a singing block (or blocks) in every single stand. If you want to get up and start impromptu singing, sit there. If you don't, sit nearby so you can join in with the second line along with everyone else.

That's how it works at away games.

If the away fans are also placed on level 3 wouldn't the acoustics and style of stadium mean that the noise they generate would feel stronger than if they are on level 1? I'm not an expert on any of this, but it's something that needs looking at. We need a soundwave expert for that one.
I can definitely help with that. He's a Boro fan and usually enjoys day trips to Beijing, Prague and Sydney, but I'm sure he'd welcome the business and a short commute. I think the club have my contact details if they're reading this.

I'm another one for turning off the PA music by the way, it's pointless, and we've a long history of downbeat music to welcome the teams. As Gary points out the situation needs to be monitored closely on the day. No point drowning out the fans. I mean, who on earth goes to EA to listen to the PA music??
