Melbourne City FC Thread

Just seen the highlights. Going very well at the moment. Looked a good crowd too.

Big game coming up Friday morning, win and City go top I think.

It's down under so a win should put them bottom right?

They're stating to get a decent squad together. Caceeres played his first game since he arrived on loan and did OK. Two players that stand out for Me are midfielder Mooy, who appears to be the new star player in Aus. He could definitely do a job in the premier league & the other is Fornaroli, a real hard working striker who i think is currently top scorer in the A League.
Whether they will be good enough to win the league this season i'm not so sure, they need to strengthen up the defence.

Looked a good crowd too.

Looked it up on the official website. The crowd was given as 10,825.

I was wondering about the crowds, actually. The average as far as I can tell seems to be up only by a few hundred compared to what Melbourne Heart were drawing in 2014, when they were bottom. There seems to have been a considerable improvement in the quality of the team but not much in terms of pulling power.

Is this because they've gained fans but the new enthusiasts are offset by former Heart supporters who were disillusioned by the rebrand? Or is it simply because Vcitory were established several years earlier so had a major head start in winning the allegiance of the soccer public in the city?

Just interested to know, because I keep expecting them to be playing to bigger crowds.

I think it's all about performances and results. It's really only the past couple of months we've seen a real improvement in performances and consistency.

Always going to be a struggle against the other team, they're probably the biggest team in the league. But so much like the rags, so it seems common sense for anyone in Melbourne to choose City over them.

Would be interesting to hear from our Heart/City supporters on here whether many of the old supporters have walked as a result of the rebranding.

I know their active supporter group disbanded but my gut feeling is that many of them are still around.

Melbourne is a very concentrated sporting market. With a population of nearly 5 million we have at least 20 professional sporting teams. Not to mention several annual big drawing events Grand prix motor/bike racing carnivals tennis plus a few others I have missed. Anyway my point is that it's a pretty sophisticated market that requires long-term sustained quality to develop a large supporter base. Short sighted gimmicks rarely works.
The other team had been the sole soccer team for the first 5 years and won 2 titles and attracted most of the interest from those wanting to watch elite soccer on a weekly basis.
Heart was formed but never really grabbed the imagination of the public. Mediocre on field performances matched with pretty shambolic marketing attempts resulted in a small following. Having said all that, most that followed Heart were quiet loyal and we have had a gradual rise of season ticket holders over the years but I suspect a very high churn rate.
Once CFG took over there was an initial spurt of interest and aligned with the announcement of David Villa playing we had a few home non derby games getting close to 15k but once he left after 4 pretty un eventual games the numbers soon halved. This has also happened at the same time when the other team has been it's strongest since Heart/City has existed and have won 3 trophies. The colour change also created some bad feelings and some definitely would not have renewed.
But I'm optimistic about long-term. I feel (without any real data) we have a large latent base that with sustained success and attractive positive soccer we will grow.
The other team for some reason have a self righteous attitude that for the neutral in my opinion is a real turn off.
What we need is a successful few seasons and hopefully a couple world class players.

At the moment we are sitting second and play Friday night for top spot. Our ladies are playing Sunday for the title so it's exciting times.
