Melbourne City FC Thread

Actually ignore the above.

One of the groups have 3 teams, and because of that the criteria to qualify as 2nd placed has altered. Apparently results against bottom placed teams are expunged from calculating final standings.

So basically I've got not real idea and will wait till Monday. What I do know we can stll qualify and as per normal we never do anything straightforwardly there are always mitigating circumstances.

Tell us about it

You’re part of the City group. We have been perfecting the art of not doing things straightforwardly for decades!

Unless I’ve misread things, the recent league results seem to suggest that the title lies in City’s hands again.
Spot on.

We've now finished our Asian adventure and missed out on the progressing to last 16 on goal difference. In fact we we go out being undefeated work that out! 3 wins 3 draws 12 points yet missed out on qualifying. I still can't work it out.

Back to the League, Western United dropped points and yes we are now in control to win the League. We fly back from Thailand and play Perth on Wednesday, I'm assuming we fly directly to Perth, then play the Nix at home, we win both, we win the Plate. We sit on 46 points after 24 games, Victory 45 points after 25 games, and Western United 44 points 24 games.

Interesting point to note, next years ACL qualification is by winning the League not the Grand Final.

Thanks for that. Does that mean you can win the title on Wednesday if Western United draw or lose against Newcastle, before you play, and then you win in Perth?

If that change in qualification is the case, then what would be the point of the Grand Final? Save for the opportunity to wear a toilet seat around your neck- each to their own- and the usual commercial exploitation, it would surely be redundant, no?

Correct. If they don't win, and we win then we cannot be caught.

Regarding the toilet seat.

Exactly. It is now regarded as the lesser trophy. Only caveat being in the hearts and minds of Australians winning the granny is the ultimate prize.

I think it's great change as does the soccer purists, but I'm not sure how it will translate.

As always the best thing is win the plate and seat.

You’d think with a name like Glover he’d be a brilliant goalkeeper, but he seems fixed on dispelling the notion of nominative determinism.

Must now win at home to Wellington on Monday or rely on unlikely permutations.

They were poor in the first AFC game which cost them qualification, hopefully they'll have the travel miles out of their legs for the last game.

A mid-table game against a side with an awful goal difference at home where a win wins the league.

MC would have been happy with that early season after the slow start....just don't do a typical City and all will be well.

KO is 10.05am on 09/05 here in the UK should anyone fancy watching.

Okay I had some time to process the last 18 hours or so and have resolved myself to the fact that regardless of how easy a task for us we will find a way to complicate it.

We were given arguably the easiest possible group ever given to an A League team, that is no J League, K League (we had a current mid table Korean div 2) no Chinese super League and being split east/west we were also protected from the strong Gulf state teams. And what do we do, we fail to get out of the group and down to 2 goals. Okay there was some extraordinary circumstances but still we should have progressed. Now I'm not being stiffny nosed at the Philippines or Thais but still a fact is a fact.

Then after playing 6 games in 19 days in 30 plus degree heat 80% plus humidity almost zero squad rotation we play our 7th in 23 with basically the same blokes against a youth team in Perth. I am in no way being disrespectful to Perth but they are bang last for a reason and we somehow loose 2:0.

So now it comes down to last game Monday and again we couldn't ask for an easier calculation. Victory play Saturday night, Western play Sunday and we of course play Monday knowing exactly what is required. And once again I wouldn't be surprised if we find a way to cock it up.

Obviously my rant shadows into insignificance in comparison to what you all experienced a few hours later, but losing at any level sucks balls.

It's called Cityitis mate. It will never go away.

You'll have to go some to beat our balls up last night...

Western have lost and are now out of it, but Victory currently sit at the top with a two point lead, having fulfilled their fixtures, which means City know that only a win against Wellington will suffice. Beat them ‘away‘ 0 v 6 at the start of April, so what could possibly go wrong tomorrow?…

Yep what could go wrong?

Look if we can't beat the Nix tomorrow then we don't deserve the plate simples.

The only thing that really will wind up many is that then would make Victory premiers.

So if anything our true Heartness should get us over the line and basically win entirely driven by spite.

Anyway see what happens tomorrow night.
