Re: MCFC buy Melbourne Heart FC (merged)

I read the majority of the takeover thread on their forum and got a general impression of their fans. One thing that struck me was that they were pretty much all in agreement about changing the name, but not the colours. It seemed a bit strange that they're all so happy to just bin the name but feel so passionately about the kit. If any Heart fans can shed any light on here it would be nice.
It's a very interesting dynamic at the moment here in Melbourne, and in particular how us Heart are approaching the sale of our club. On one hand I think we've all been beaten into submission by a string of terrible performances on field, and broken or half arsed promises from our former owners regarding the direction of the club. As a result, a lot of supporters are quite happy to dispense with what they feel represents a pretty unconvincing start to our club. Any renaming to 'Melbourne City' would be fine with me, as it's something I've been pushing for since our first season. As the fans sing, 'We are Melbourne!' so I doubt a change from Heart to City is going to be a big deal for most. We're all Melburnians anyway.
On the other hand, there seems to be this simmering 'purist' angle that's dead against this globalised modern football business. That's fair enough, but understand that our league is essentially franchise-based, with only three clubs existing in some form prior to the formation of the A-League. The league is also very young, notwithstanding the now defunct NSL, so there's another angle.
So for us Heart fans who've put up with mediocrity, what little identity we've built is in a big way through our colours. Red and white also represents the City of Melbourne, and is seen by pretty much all of us as a non-negotiable.
Until last Saturday, we hadn't won a league match in 19 attempts, and our record stands at 26 wins from 100 league outings. But there is a core support that still turns up. It's a bit like Sisyphus I guess, however I think the majority of supporters are on board with what's happened generally.
Anyway, personally I'm cautiously optimistic. I think by and large the changes will be pretty amazing for our club and the league, but no doubt there'll be a few things I disagree with. I'm certainly looking forward to the ride.
