Mendy undergoes knee surgery

Completely agree, in fact Mendy is the best example of emperor's new clothes I've seen in professional sport for a long time. Yes he has contributed assists but as a defender he just doesn't cut it.

Personally I would rather forgo 1 or 2 crosses into the box each game for the reassurance my full back isn't giving the ball away, being caught out of position or tripping over his own feet!

My choice would be Danilo who has as good an engine, is infinitely a better footballer, can tackle without injuring himself and scored a scorcher from Left Back v Burnley last year. In fact all 3 candidates to replace Mendy are every bit as good as, or even better than Mendy in there own way.

Is the hype from some the reason why he gets so much stick from others?

Some of the criticism of him is way ott.

It’s bad news but Zinchenko and Delph have proven that they can perform at a high level at left back.

However, Mendy does add another dimension to our attack and over the past few weeks (Tottenham game aside) he has shown signs of becoming more acclimatised to our system.

Hopefully he’ll return before 2019.

Danlio was tried at left back and was awful, hence why Delph got his chance

Sessegnon from Fulham, English, Pep could do a lot to further his career
This is the problem with the threat of reduced number of foreign players. The default proposal for each position will become the most “getable” English player who invariably will be more of a risk and more expensive.

I wouldn’t mind Sessegnon but I wouldn’t see him as a first choice yet. Wouldn’t he be better at a club (anywhere in the world) where he gets as much game time as possible?

Has he been carrying this for some time or is it a new injury?

The reason I ask is the timing, it suggests this surgery was preplanned given it's been done at the beginning of an international break.

Sorry but i don't buy the hype at all with this guy.
Very injury prone and not that good defensively.
That's 2 big injuries now in 2 years, he has bareley played for us.
We should invest in a new full.back who can manage more than 20 games a season, very disappointing but predictable news.
It seems the club bought him after 2 good outings against us for Monaco, all we have had In return for our 60 million is daily tweets and updates on his social activities.

I know, right? And what about all those clean sheets and looking much tighter at the back? Clearly he's played no part in that.

It's almost like we defend better because Mendy and the rest can retain the ball and limit needing to flap around.

C'mon man.

To be fair he did much better defensively versus top six opponents this season than one would have expected

Thinking back to the Spurs game he 'bottled' at least one 50/50 and also did it in a later home game, can't remember which one.

I was calling him for it but perhaps this was the reason? I'm not medical person but this I feel is purely a pre-planned operation that he's been waiting for until the international break.

Apart from Spurs, that game and the Southampton game his defending was suspect, he got the runaround from Traore a bit when he came on for Wolves too, that aside he's been fine defensively.
