Fight the system. Get yourself a basic second account and put money in it that is never more than the cost of the highest ticket. Mobile banking means you can easily load up there and then.

You shouldn't get bank charges that way and they'll have to chase you for the money for any charges

It may state something in the terms and conditions that you have to pay the penalty fare and they might pursue you for it but unless it gets to CCJ I would swerve it where possible.

Once it gets to that stage unless you have a valid and arguable appeal, you need to pay up though.

It's not worth the risk of fighting it at that stage.

Does the Metro link have an oyster card equivalent that doesn't need to be registered?
