A civilized society should also tolerate peaceful protest, and personally I wouldn't trust a trigger happy and corrupt Met with a spud gun, let alone a water cannon.
I'm only surprised that they haven't asked for plastic bullets, although I don't suppose they really need them, given the damage they do already with real ones without facing any repercussions.

You realise fetters that your post implicitly acknowledges that London is a civilised society?

Come on down to Hoxton, there's a vanilla shot skinny latte with your name on it.

I'm not sure anything skinny is appropriate for me anymore Chris, and I'm more your Shoreditch dropout nowadays.
It surprises me that the Met feel the need to control you unwashed southerners with a large water cannon to be honest, as the rest of Britain seems to be law abiding enough without threats of an impromptu shower.
Will they spray demonstrators in Kensington with Evian water?

I don't kneau

The thing that annoys me most about this is that we're buying them from Germany. Can't we just pay the extra money and get a factory in some deprived area of the country to build them - creating more jobs and helping OUR economy?

they should arm them with water balloons.....every riot would turn into a laugh.

****pictures the filth laughing hard as they beat soaked rioters senselessly****

the filth play dirty in water fights, losing is not an option for them.

Approval has been given for the Metropolitan Police to purchase three water cannon for London.

Stephen Greenhalgh, deputy mayor for policing and crime, authorised the force to buy the cannon from the German Federal Police.

The mayor's office said: "By purchasing them now we are able to save over £2.3m compared to buying new devices."

The water cannon will not be deployed until the home secretary authorises their use in England and Wales.

In a statement, the mayor's office said purchasing the cannon now for just over £218,000, before Theresa May approves them, meant they could be bought at a "considerably reduced rate".

We might not be a police state in the real sense at the minute but by jove it's not for the lack of effort ;-)

Boris Johnson has agreed to be blasted by water cannon to prove that they are safe enough to be used on the streets of London, after the Mayor challenged Theresa May’s authority by ordering three without Home Office approval.

With trust between police and public at an all time low right now it just goes to show the disdain that this government has for the people it's suppoed to serve.

No it doesn't - your own post states that this Government has not approved the purchase of these items. This is the Mayor of London acting WITHOUT Government approval.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your agenda though.

Having the tools to maintain social order is a necessary evil in a civilised society, I'm afraid.

I fully accept that NF. Peaceful protest is a civil right imo. The two propositions shouldn't be mutually exclusive, however.

As long as this device is only ever deployed in the most extreme of circumstances, or preferably, never, then I am entirely comfortable with its existence.

How many situations can you recall off the top of your head in the last, 30 years say, in this country, where you think water cannons would have been an acceptable way of dealing with a situation?

Etihad Stadium, 13 May 2012 at about 5.00pm.

Our first title in 44 years and those fuckers from the south stand wouldn't get off the pitch so our captain could raise the trophy.

It wasn't big and it wasn't clever.
