I'm only surprised that they haven't asked for plastic bullets, although I don't suppose they really need them, given the damage they do already with real ones without facing any repercussions.
As long as this device is only ever deployed in the most extreme of circumstances, or preferably, never, then I am entirely comfortable with its existence.
How many situations can you recall off the top of your head in the last, 30 years say, in this country, where you think water cannons would have been an acceptable way of dealing with a situation?
Possibly in Croydon during the civil unrest a couple of years ago. It may act as a deterrent in certain circumstances. I take your point about its (hopefully) limited use, though.
