I was in Acapulco in 1987 when they had a force 7 quake. I was staying in a hotel called La Palapa, which was 30 stories tall and I was on the 20th floor when it happened, 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. The room was shaking so violently, with things thrown all over the place. To this day, I don't know if the height of the hotel amplified it, or whether it would have been the same at ground level. Anyway, we had to go down 20 flights of stairs in the pitch dark because all the power had failed, including the emergency lighting.

The weirdest bit was being on the beach immediately afterwards - having moved away from the hotel as there was fear it could collapse - and then the beach was shaking under your feet. We had never heard of tsunami's at the time, or perhaps we would have gone inland instead!

Needless to say, I will never forget this experience so long as I live.

Not to change the idea that it is safe to go to the likes of Cancun - as hinted at before, Mexico is a large enough country that one part of it can be going through the shit, whilst another is perfectly safe - but still, the likes of this https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...attened-as-scale-of-earthquake-damage-emerges can give an idea of what has gone on. Spare a thought too, for those in Puerto Rico but also the likes of Laos that's experiencing the this kinda of thing
