My best mate is Jack Straw's senior advisor and this is fact...
Michael Shields may well be innocent. Highly likely that he is. However, he will never be released unless the verdict is overturned by a Bulgarian Court. If Straw was to release him then it would contravene every international law regarding imprisonment and would give carte blanche to every state to release, or demand the release of, pretty much anyone they want.

While it's not quite that bad, as our courts have ruled that he does have the power of pardon, I think that he's more than likely unwilling to offer up precedent that a returned prisoner from a foreign country will be released as soon as they get back to the UK - that would mean that more brits who are locked up abroad would be less likely to be returned to the UK, if we had the perception that letting them serve their time here actually meant they'd be released.

However I think a few attitudes on here would change if this would have happened to a blue in Hamburg last season!

This isn't City related but I would like to express my support for this young man that has been imprisoned for roughly 3 years for a crime that it would appear he has not committed. I hope that decent football fans of all teams would support him as not only do I believe in his innocence, a miscarriage of justice especially abroad could land anyone of us in his position.

Jack Straw should be ashamed in my view.

I find it hard to beleive that in a resort, there apparently are no cameras (or none are mentionned). In the hotel entrace for example, if he is innocent you'd think there'd be backup there.

I have no opinions on his guilt or not.
