'We are calling for access to Gaza for our entire humanitarian movement' - UN chief​

“The UN's under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, said the whole humanitarian movement must gain access to Gaza.

"When we call for unimpeded access through all the crossings, we are calling for that for our entire humanitarian movement.

"We need them back on the ground delivering at scale and in a principled humanitarian way," he said”

A famine has officially been confirmed in Gaza City and the surrounding neighbourhoods by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

The UN-backed, globally recognised system for classifying food insecurity and malnutrition has declared just four other famines since it was established in 2004.

This announcement is the IPC's first outside of Africa. Gaza City is home to around half a million people.

Prior famines were confirmed in Somalia in 2011, and in Sudan in 2017, 2020, and 2024.

Deaths from malnutrition and starvation are spiking, according to figures from Gaza's Health Ministry, verified by the World Health Organisation.

In just the first 20 days of August, there were 133 deaths attributed to malnutrition or starvation, including 25 children, the ministry said.

There were almost 13,000 new admissions of children for acute malnutrition recorded in July, according to the latest from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs

Public opinion is being reflected in the decline in Israeli goods imported by the UK.

Figures last week from the Office for National Statistics show seasonally unadjusted imports fell in the April-June quarter to £283m, compared with £343m in January-March, and were down almost 15 percent on the first six months of 2024, when imports totalled £735m on a similar basis.

“I suppose ‘doing nothing’ is unfairness, did I mention ‘condemnations’ in yesterday’s lesson? Yes, that right Leah, they’re something you write up when you’ve no intention of stopping war crimes but need to be looking like you give a shit. Top marks,” responded Carmody.

“And other countries worked really hard to be top of queue for when Israel wanted to buy more weapons!”

Carmody then sighed a deep sigh when asked by another pupil if anyone was arrested and tried for their crimes or complicity, and if not, then why does he get detention for punching his desk mate?
 
Heartbreaking

Madeleine McGivern, who has worked in Gaza and Israel as a human rights monitor, says it's difficult for her contacts in the region to put into words what they are witnessing as a result of the lack of supplies in the Strip.

She tells BBC Radio 5 Live that she's heard of "children... just waiting to die and actually expressing a wish to die because it's easier than what they're going through".

"And then on top of that, we come to famine," she continues. "We come to the slow shutting down of a body when it doesn't have the food and the water that it needs. And that in itself is obviously something excruciating, physically and then mentally, to watch."

"What has been enacted to these people in Gaza is, as the UN rightly say, a shame on all of us and will echo for generations."

I’m already checking potatoes as I heard “Israel produce and export to the UK spuds” I feel silly checking food where it’s from or produced but luckily a lot of fruit and vegetables have small UK flags on.
 
Foreign Secretary David Lammy said:

“The confirmation of famine in Gaza City and the surrounding neighbourhood is utterly horrifying and is wholly preventable.

The Israeli government’s refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza has caused this man-made catastrophe. This is a moral outrage.

The IPC report makes clear the sickening consequences, especially for children. The Government of Israel can and must immediately act to stop the situation deteriorating any further. It must immediately and sustainably allow unhindered food, medical supplies, fuel, and all types of aid to reach those who so desperately need them.

The Israeli government must allow the UN and international NGOs to carry out their life-saving work without obstruction. Aid must reach those in need urgently and without delay.

We desperately need an immediate ceasefire, to enable aid delivery at maximum speed and at the scale required. This includes halting the military operation in Gaza City which is the epicentre of the famine.

The UK reiterates its condemnation of this military action, which will only worsen the already catastrophic humanitarian situation and endanger the lives of the hostages held by Hamas. We urge the Israeli government to change course and halt its plans.

This terrible conflict must end. An immediate and permanent ceasefire is the only way to stop the suffering, secure the release of the hostages, achieve a surge in aid and deliver a framework for lasting peace.”

While elected members of parliament take back handers or even front handers we are never going to be free of the US/Israel lobbyists and in the pocket of big business. They take a salary from our tax money including perks second homes heating allowance, chauffeurs. The real RIP off Britain MPs means we never get truthful governance.
 
Frankly Israel has forfeited the right to its existence.
From it's creation it has treated the indigenous people with contempt.
Instead of gratitude to be given a piece of land that wasn't theirs they have just been rapacious always wanting more.

While the US and Britain and other genocide enablers carry on supporting this fascist state there is no hope for the Palestinian people. However the strength in adversity they have shown means that when US hegemony collapses Israel will collapse and Palestinians will have the right of return.
