Middle East Conflict

I think you may have missed the moment when Netanyahu fostered the rise of Hamas because it would help stop the formation of a Palestinian state.

“Netanyahu’s strategy is to prevent the option of two states, so he is turning Hamas into his closest partner. Openly Hamas is an enemy. Covertly, it’s an ally.”
- Major General Gershon Hacohen, Associate of Prime Minister Israel (2019)

“Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel’s creation.”
- Avner Cohen, Israel Religious Affairs (2009)

“Israel’s experience echoes that of the U.S., which, during the Cold War, looked to Islamists as a useful ally against communism, (...) Anti-Soviet forces backed by America after Moscow’s 1979 invasion of Afghanistan later mutated into al Qaeda.”
- How Israel Helped to Spawn Hamas, Wall Street Journal (2009).

“The Palestinian Authority is a burden, and Hamas is an asset,”
- Bezalel Smotrich (2015), now a Minister of the current Israel Cabinet, and one of the few in the war cabinet.

“For years, Netanyahu propped up Hamas. Now it’s blown up in our faces.”
- Times of Israel (October 7, 2023)

"(The) destructive, warped political doctrine that held that strengthening Hamas at the expense of the Palestinian Authority would be good for Israel.”
- Haaretz (October 11, 2023)

"When I look back at the chain of events I think we made a mistake, but at the time nobody thought about the possible results."
- David Hacham, Arab-affairs expert IDF (2009).

"Both Egypt and Qatar are angry with Hamas and planned to cut ties with them. Suddenly Netanyahu appears as the defender of Hamas."
- Avigdor Liberman, Defence Minister (2020)

"the price of crushing Hamas is a price that Israel would prefer not to pay."
- Efraim Halevy, 2002 Director of Mossad

Netanyahu's "strategy is to keep Hamas alive and kicking … even at the price of abandoning the citizens (of the south) in order to weaken the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah."
- Ehud Barak, Former Prime Minister (August 2019)

Picture of a young settler extremist who stole an ornament from Yitzhak Rabin's car shortly before Rabin was assassinated. Today this man has eight Israeli criminal convictions - including convictions for supporting a terrorist organisation and incitement to racism. He is now Israel's National Security Minister - Itamar Ben Gvir

I'd like more of the context on

"Both Egypt and Qatar are angry with Hamas and planned to cut ties with them. Suddenly Netanyahu appears as the defender of Hamas."
- Avigdor Liberman, Defence Minister (2020)

I see our elected representatives and their families are getting intimidated by Pro Palestinian activists.
No surprise.
