Middle East Conflict

Exactly. I think his age is a factor, and you are probably commending him for doing what he is doing DESPITE HIS AGE. But there should never be a president in place for whom staying at home because he is old is an issue. I don’t think so anyway

I think most previous Presidents would have stayed at home. Biden is unusual in turning up in hotspots. American politics is domestic politics, foreign visits are for show, not for actually trying to do something given the risk of failure is invariably high.

The peaceful one where people don’t die.

Truth seems to be of secondary importance to narrative at the moment.

War doesn’t determine who is right, war determines who is left to negotiate around the table.

Neither side are coming out of this well at present.
Totally agree.

Ah, that was when Trump claimed to have brought peace to the Middle East*. Unfortunately, Trump also killed the Iranian deal out of spite and even more unfortunately, Iran was more of an issue with regard to normalising relations.

The Accords didn‘t address the main issue and Iran/Hamas have driven a hole through them. How Israel reacts and the path it takes going forward will determine when, or if, the Accords can be resurrected.

*He didn’t.

So, you'd prefer a nuclear armed Iran ?

You'd also like the Ayatollahs to hvae even more free cash to indulge terrorism around the world ?

As earlier stated, there are always, and will always be bad actors ( Putin, for example) to undermine any agreement in which they don't get 100% of what they want.

It's those accords that have brought this latest round of violence to the fore. it basically ignored the plight of the Palestinians, and lead governments in the West to think that the situation can "managed" which gave the far right Israeli government the green light to expand settlements and carry out provocations against the West bank Palestinians, furthermore they built a wall around Gaza and when the prisoners were well behaved they allowed a few out and a bit of aid in, they built settlements right next to the Gaza border like they were taunting the inhabitants

It frustrates the hell out me, I have lived over there I have Israeli friends who knew it was going to explode soon or later. yet I read stuff on here that portrays it as a Black and White situation, yes of course Hamas is a bad actor backed by Iran who have their own reasons, and the killing of innocent Israelis was a terrible thing and those behind it deserve the full weight of justice, the the innocent Palestinian Civilians don't deserve to be bombed and have there very basic lives ruined, it's kind of like some people think this is perfectly acceptable and they brought it upon themselves
That's one thing I can't get my head around. Why do people go and live so close to the border? Are they encouraged to go there? Do they go there out of some nationalistic identity thing? They presumably aren't all right-wing nutjobs. I suppose they thought they were safe. What is that all about?

There's a decent Louis Theroux documentary about it all, most of it seems to revolve around a religious right to be there

I don't have enough knowledge of the hatred between Israel and Palestine to make any informed view, but what's going on is quite utterly, bonkers. But i do appreciate the people on this thread with the knowledge of the history posting comments which allows me to read up on it

So what you're saying is when every news organisation has a breaking news banner saying Israel have bombed a Hospital, We shouldn't post those words?
So when supposedly reliable news outlets have stories saying City are guilty of the charges against us and should be heavily punished, we need to believe that?

It's an old cliche but truth really is the first casualty of war. We don't know for sure what happened to that hospital, apart from hundreds of people being killed. It could be that it was an Israeli missile/bomb that targeted the hospital, or that missed its intended target and hit the hospital instead. That deserves the utmost condemnation if so, and is very possibly a war crime.

Or it could be that it was a Palestinian rocket, that maybe ignited ordnance stored at the hospital. I believe that would possibly constitute a war crime as well. But I think we both know, deep down, that the chances are that neither side will be held accountable in an international court for these. Same for Putin and many others committing these acts.

The issue is that, whatever the truth, there are plenty on both sides who will refuse to accept it.

This is a decent, unbiased (and short) explanation if you can be arsed..

I suppose the question is why Iran sponsors terrorism. It clearly isn't because they care so much for the Palestinian people.

I can't help thinking the US could be handling Iran better.
