Middle East Conflict

I'm not sure there's actually a lot countries who are against a Ceasefire and still want the bombing to carry on. Yanks, UK?
I don’t know to be honest. All I keep seeing are the “Israel has a right to defend themselves as long as it’s accordance with international law” comments. Calls for a ceasefire will continue to grow I’m sure if civilian casualties continue to rack up at anything like the present rate

Easy to see how both sides, and what they represent, are despised by much of the world, both now and historically. Religious and racial division at its worst, with each party supported unconditionally by the usual suspects.

They are both committing atrocities and will reap what they sow.

Israel have been gunning for the UN since they first designated the illegal settlements a war crime about 5 years ago, and they, plus Amnesty and HRW have been documenting IDF war crimes and bringing attention to it.

So nothing surprising at all about Israel attacking the UN, depressing that they think they can do so without consequences - the UN isn’t some random 3rd party organisation, it’s funded and run by some of Israel’s biggest donors, allies and protectors and you either join it and follow along, or you leave and take the reputational damage of being a self imposed pariah from the global community.

“We’re interested in seeing branches and sequels,” a US official said, using American military terminology referring to different battle plans and post-invasion scenarios.

“There is a direct connection between the management of the war and the ‘morning after’. It’s supposed to inform the military operation. Right now it’s disconnected.”

The US Army describes a FRAGPLAN as planning "branches and sequels". A branch is a contingency plan or "options built into the base plan" whereas a sequel refers to "subsequent operations based on the possible outcomes of the current operation"

The irony here is That’s basically the problems the Americans had in Afghanistan and Iraq.

They knew they were going to invade someone and toppling the governments would be popular, but their war plans ended with the Taliban/Saddam being removed. They had no blueprint for rebuilding the countries, handing over power, keeping the economies going or dealing with insurgencies and loyalists.

As I said, probably wishful thinking on my part. I think the ground invasion hasn’t happened so far because Israel has an intelligence deficit and a lot of Israelis / IDF would lose their lives.

It’s clear that the people making the decisions about the hostages are doing a bit more thinking than the savages on the October 7th attack. All evil no doubt, but some a bit more tactical. There are some obvious PR wins. Release the husbands of the returned hostages who shook the hands of their captors. There will be other hostages who are a burden because of medical needs etc. Having so many hostages is probably a burden as other posters have said.

Al hostages should be returned but there is no real detriment to Hamas IIMHO if they release 50 hostages for starters.

The hostages are the thing that’s really looming large over this whole war/invasion/retaliation. Hamas probably won’t release any hostages for free because they want the return of what they see as Israel’s hostages.

Currently there’s 1200 Palestinians locked up in Israel being held despite not being charged with any crimes, without having a trial of any kind, and without knowing how long they will be locked up for.

And those are just the ones locked up illegally. Hamas will also want to trade for some of their own fighters and leaders who are imprisoned legally - about another 3500.

I assume they’ve given the few they’ve traded for aid getting in to show they’re interested in swaps, that they’re not treating the hostages too badly and they’re still alive.

The quicker it’s resolved the better though, the longer those people are being hidden in a war zone with 30,000 Hamas militants, and a civilian population getting bombed 1000 times a day, the more likely something awful will happen.

Aren't they designated terrorists? Genuine question.
