The hostages are the thing that’s really looming large over this whole war/invasion/retaliation. Hamas probably won’t release any hostages for free because they want the return of what they see as Israel’s hostages.
Currently there’s 1200 Palestinians locked up in Israel being held despite not being charged with any crimes, without having a trial of any kind, and without knowing how long they will be locked up for.
A rights group says that Israel is holding 1,201 detainees without charge or trial, nearly all of them Palestinians, the highest number in over three decades.

And those are just the ones locked up illegally. Hamas will also want to trade for some of their own fighters and leaders who are imprisoned legally - about another 3500.
I assume they’ve given the few they’ve traded for aid getting in to show they’re interested in swaps, that they’re not treating the hostages too badly and they’re still alive.
The quicker it’s resolved the better though, the longer those people are being hidden in a war zone with 30,000 Hamas militants, and a civilian population getting bombed 1000 times a day, the more likely something awful will happen.
