Midfield

Plain to see thats where our big problem is, i know roberto knows this and i'm positive the right players will be brought in.

If teams stop us on the wings we clueless.

box 2 box and a flair playmaker will do the trick :
got to agree with this, sure rm will sort it out

gotta agree!

barry = works hard but is an average player really.
dejong = probably the best out of the lot however lacking going forward ( i know its not his job)
viera = past it
ireland = not good enough at the moment unless he gets his form back.

In the past two games Kompany and Toure have been more threatening going forward than our centre midfield which is a joke really. If Lescot wasn't injured then I think moving Toure into the midfield instead of De Jong might be a good option for us. He did actually start his Arsenal career as a midfielder as well

Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. It's the same thing every game - too big a distance between midfield and attack. Carlos seems to come deep less and less (and who can blame him?).

It's a tricky one - three in the middle would mean there was no place for Adebayor, so can Carlos lead the line on his own? And we've got four good wingers...

De Jong has attracted a lot of grief on here of late, when the reality is that if we had a fully functioning midfield, his role is one we would hardly notice. As it is, with either Vieira or Barry alongside him, we are always far too deep in midfield, and tonight was another example of the alarming space that the opposition were afforded deep into our own half.

IMO we are missing exactly the two players that the OP stated- a box to box midfielder and someone with a vision to pick out an incisive pass. If we had kept hold of Elano he could have made that role his own, and Ireland could have carried on where he left off last season with his persistent forward runs to open up the space for that incisive passer. Sounds good in theory anyway!

Still, tonight a win is a win, and we have to be looking at a further 6 points from the Burnley and Brum games to be in with a shout going into the last few games. We will need a good run of form going into some really tough games.

Of course he knows, you can tell by his bringing in of vierra he has his finger on the pulse, what did you think of his off the ball work btw, pmsl.

been saying it for the last couple of months now......with the players we have mancini is setting his team up wrong (we got away with it tonight once they went down to 10 men)

with the players we have we cannt play 4-4-2 and have two players in the middle of the park who dont attack

if we do all they have the opposition have to do is stop our wingers and then we are stuck

we are relying on tevez or ade to drag us into games by moments of individual brilliance (like chelski)

yes we won 3-0 and a great result it is and thank god for that

we will hopefuly beat burnley playing that way

but come up against the better teams and we wont

it is far far too predictable and pedestrian football

Games like tonight are crying out for a creative midfield player. If we had Ireland playing like he was last season, just slipping that passes through for Tevez and Adebayor we'd score hat fulls.

It was frustrating tonight watching us constantly switching the ball from wing to wing because we couldn't penetrate a packed defence.

I really don't know what you mean. With Ireland out tonight, Mancini was left with only defensive central midfielders to pick from. Bearing this in mind, a 4-4-2 to utilize our attacking players seemed like the best option. What would you have done? Gone with 4-3-3 with THREE defensive midfielders? Hang on - wasn't everyone criticizing him for this earlier in the season?

I think the Mariga and Gago deals were probably the 2 January signings that we needed most. We need 2 athletic midfielders either side of De Jong/Barry in the centre. Having 2 midfielders who are genuinely box to box would make a massive difference to our style imo and we would be clearly 4th

Gago is really not upto it imo, mariga could of been useful but tbh when we do our summer shopping i really hope we get well known top drawer midfielders.

How would you set the team up then?

VIEIRA
Successful tackles - 5 of 5
Completed passes - 55 of 70
Shots on target - 1 of 1
Assists - 1

DE JONG
Successful tackles - 5 of 5
Completed passes - 41 of 45
Shots on target - 0 of 0
Assists - 0

So Vieira had a superior game in all aspects except passes going astray, but as most of his were forward and attempts to set up attacks, it's understandable. It's easy to complete passes if they are all sideways and backwards.

Never mind the facts, though. Carry on with the bullshit.

we have a player in that team tonight who can play there........ johnson could slot in there looking at the balance he displays, inside, outside, great awareness, can pick a pass, and puts a shift in tracking back. In all honesty if swp was showing any form i'd do this tomorrow. Cracking player on our hands here.

-- Mon Mar 29, 2010 11:27 pm --

we have a player in that team tonight who can play there........ johnson could slot in there looking at the balance he displays, inside, outside, great awareness, can pick a pass, and puts a shift in tracking back.
