Midfield

we are way to negative. we basically get over run most weeks
in midfield. can anyone work out or style of play. It's not counter attacking,
just defend the edge of our box and hoof it to the forwards and hope they
create something with no support from mid field. it's shocking and frustrating to watch. we don't have to bully teams we should be able to play possession
football even wigan tried to play and they where the away team.

again you fail to see the bigger picture....Im happy we won but we are playing poorly and tonight was another example.....

we got away with it tonight cause they went down to 10 men...until that we were very average at best....play this way against better teams and we will lose or draw more than we win

oh and since your so fond of stats....2 loses in a month....isnt that more than MH had in 4 months???? ;-)

You keep saying that I fail to see the bigger picture, what we disagree is that for me the bigger picture and only important issuevis getting enough points to finish 4th.

On that front we are doing well after falling behind under the previous manager.

So you'll have to excuse me if I don't really give a toss if you are unhappy with the way we set up or our manner of play. You never had a problem when the previous manager played two defensive midfielders and we weren't getting the results.

Now we have a new manager, are getting results as good or better than any of our rivals and you haven't stopped whining.

In the past two games Kompany and Toure have been more threatening going forward than our centre midfield which is a joke really. If Lescot wasn't injured then I think moving Toure into the midfield instead of De Jong might be a good option for us. He did actually start his Arsenal career as a midfielder as well

Has Toure ever scored a goal playing in the midfield position?

ok i take your point about the immediate issue is getting 4th....and i agree with that...i guess at the moment i can understand the "by any means necessary" approach

MH did play 2 defensive midfielders at times but nowhere near as often as RM does....and RM sometimes plays 3......and like i said, sometimes i can understand the idea of playing two (against certain teams and away at times).....however not all the time....

Im not saying I want MH back (you seem to think that I do want him back...I was against his sacking but that was for various reasons....mainly stability within the club and that i thought that by a lot of city fans he was never given a fair chance due to his utd connections...and you can argue against that as much as you like but i know for a FACT that there were certain sections of support that NEVER gave him a chance from day one)......

I have also said that i think RM has done a good job on a number of issues (especially concerning the defensive aspect of our game and making us harder to score against (even from set pieces)...so its not all whinning as you so delicately put it! Ive also said two days ago in the RM vs Mourihno poll thread that i thought mancini should be given at least the next two yrs to see if he can get us where we want to be....there are others that are already disatisfied to the point where they want him out...Im not one of them.

but do you agree that we will have to play better in the future to continue progressing????....cause i believe we have to. That performance last night (along with others/ was decidedly average at best.

-- Tue Mar 30, 2010 10:32 am --

Shots on target - 0 of 0
Assists - 0

So Vieira had a superior game in all aspects except passes going astray, but as most of his were forward and attempts to set up attacks, it's understandable. It's easy to complete passes if they are all sideways and backwards.

Never mind the facts, though. Carry on with the bullshit.

Viera was the only one trying to pick a forward pass and some of his one touch stuff under pressure was great, then again that's not what Nig is in the team for - the balance doesn't look right
I'd love to know what Nig is in the team for, he certainly didn't boss the area in front of the back four last night and anyone with common sense must realise that aint a one man job. No team can afford to have a player with as little ability at premiership level!

Don't really have too much option but clearly Vieira and De Jong is not the combo to take us forward.

When Wigan were down to ten men Mancini should have taken one of them off immediately and gone with a more attacking formation imo

Personally I think Vieira is past it and we should stick with DJ and GazzaBazza for now.

Oh dear you really are fcuking deluded "SON" i don't like your attitude it smells a funny colour!!

Marek Hamsik "nothing special" LMFAO you idiot!!!!!

Blue is the colour for Hamsik
(FIFA.com) Thursday 11 March 2010

Marek Hamsik is in the form of his life, an undisputed first choice in the light blue of Napoli and an equally certain starter in the dark blue of Slovakia. The 22-year old attacking midfielder is also his country’s captain and the man coach Vladimir Weiss will be looking to when the eastern Europeans line up at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Despite his young age, Hamsik can already be considered a veteran of Italian football. He was only 17 when he joined Serie B outfit Brescia from Slovan Bratislava, the club where he nurtured his skills. After learning the ropes, the teenager forced his way into the Biancoazzurro starting XI and enjoyed an exceptional 2006/07 season, scoring ten goals in 40 games and exerting an increasing influence in the side.

Rhythm and blues
Keeping close tabs on his development were Napoli, who lured him to the Stadio San Paolo, where he struck up an immediate rapport with the southerners’ demanding but devoted fans. Appreciative of his commitment to the cause, the Napoli faithful are prepared to go to unusual lengths to show how much they care about the man they call Marieko. Proof of that came when the Slovakian had an expensive watch stolen in December 2008, with indignant fans conducting an investigation that led to the precious timepiece being returned to its owner.

Hamsik has repaid such devotion out on the pitch. Equally skilled with either foot, the No17 is revelling in a link-up role that sees him share unglamorous defensive duties with the job of bringing his team-mates into play. Add to that his ability to get into dangerous positions, his shooting power and his cool finishing, and it is easy to see why the fan’s favourite quickly became a fixture in the Slovakia set-up.

Handed his first cap by the then national coach Jan Kocian in a 2-2 friendly draw with Poland in February 2007, Hamsik scored the first of his eight international goals against San Marino that October, hitting a brace against Liechtenstein a year later. His first taste of the captaincy came in the crucial 1-0 qualifying win away to the Poles last October, a result that clinched Slovakia’s place in the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time.

One man who sees him holding on to the armband for a long time to come is Weiss, who succeeded Kocian as national coach. “It’s true that there are older and more experienced players in the team, but Marek is incredibly gifted, a world-class player and worth his weight in gold,” says the 45-year-old boss.

“He’s always produced big performances for us and in every position I’ve used him in. Those are the reasons why I decided to make him captain.”

The jewel in the crown
With 29 internationals already to his name, Hamsik is acquiring plenty of experience of his own. “Marek is very mature for his age,” continues Weiss.

“He is without doubt one of my most versatile players and he’s just as effective an attacking midfielder as he is a support striker. Ever since he went to Napoli he’s approached every game as if it were a battle. With Marek, the players’ heads don’t go down and we’ve turned a few games around because of that.”

The Slovakian’s increasingly impressive CV and Napoli’s recent prominence in Serie A have naturally attracted the attentions of Europe’s finest. “I tried to sign Hamsik when I was at Inter,” commented one of his admirers, Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini, in the Italian press recently.

“I really wanted him to join us but Napoli got in there first. I’m not at all surprised that Europe’s biggest clubs are interested in him. He is exceptionally talented.”

“I get the feeling I’m going to have a great year,” says the man himself. “It’s started really well. My partner gave birth to our first child Christian on 15 January. And then, of course, Slovakia will be going to the World Cup for the first time. I hope we have it in us to go through with Italy, although New Zealand are an unknown quantity who could spring a surprise, and Paraguay had a great qualification campaign,” he adds in reference to his side’s Group E rivals.

Blue has been lucky colour for Hamsik so far in his career. The Slovakian sensation will be hoping it remains that way in South Africa this June, especially when he and his compatriots take on I Azzurri in a potentially decisive final group game.

VDV, SNEIJDER i suuspect they're not in the top draw bracket either?

Simon, try and look at this a little more objectively rather than with your 'anti-Mancini' hat on.

We have ONE central midifelder at the moment that offers anything other than Kompany, Zabaleta, De Jong, Barry (all Mark Hughes buys and all very similar) and Vieira. Unfortunately, not only is that player injured at this moment in time his confidence and form are at rock bottom. M.Johnson would help but he's out long-term obviously.

Mancini is somewhat defensive in his set up, it's just his nature, but I'm afraid it is just not realistic for him to wave a magic wand and suddenly transform our team into world beaters in the middle of the park.

Bellamy and Johnson are our main creative forces on the flanks and have to start, Tevez picks himself and RSC/Ade offer the height we've found out recently we HAVE to have in most games to (at least try anyway) stop the ball pinging back to us all the time.

Therefore, Mancini has to try and bluff his way until the end of the season trying to pick two midfielders in the middle of the park that will work together. There is no obvious solution to this problem without buying new players.

Finally, I really struggle to see how picking two out and out wingers and two front men is negative. I want Mancini to succeed but I'll criticise him when I feel he's fucked up; I thought he got the selection and substitutions badly wrong against Everton and I would have played Barry instead of De Jong last night (but Barry does need a rest), but it seems you have a default setting which ensures you don't even offer the faintest bit of praise to him.

Lighten up, it's all in our hands.
