Mike Summerbee on Talksport

The Newcastle-City game was definitely shown on ITV's version of MOTD on the Sunday afternoon in most of the country including Manchester. Tyne Tees TV cameras were there. Unfortunately Tyne Tees archiving policy was awful so all that remains of the footage is a low quality film print.
Yes, and the ECWC Final extended highlights were shown on the BBC either the same night or the following night.

Fucking incredible people on here questioning why he was asked about George Best. Best friend, best man, of course he will be asked. He spoke wonderfully about him as he did Bobby Moore. I can only imagine it was very difficult for him as well. It hardly dominated the two hours did it? Really enjoyed that though. The one thing is despite all the splits with ex players our Buzzer remains friends with all. I'm sure the situation between Colin Bell and Francis Lee has been a hard one for him to deal with. Great man, great person and a total Manchester City legend who represents our club fantastically.

Who is this George Best guy that they were referring too?

Points well made about animosity to George Best, no need for it. Great player, big part of Buzzer's life and that part of the interview was full of interesting material about Buzzer, City and the football scene of the time. It's understandable that our (my)heckles get raised at times, because we all know that Talksport and the BBC struggle to focus on City without seeing us in the context of United. Around the hour mark there was heightened anxiety that a City story of some pride was drifting off for too long. It was a relief to realise there was another hour and things moved on nicely. Great interview. Mike's a good talker, open and says it as it is/was. Great insight into how football was back then. No interest in medals, just in being part of it. Great to hear how involved he still likes to be and how the club value and make use of our legends going forward.

Well there were cameras at both - I think what he meant was neither were shown on TV at the time. The rags v Sunderland was on MOTD.
The ECWC was never shown live on English TV because the FA Cup final replay - Chelsea v Leeds at The Swamp - was scheduled on the same night... (agenda)

The latter of the two represents one of my earliest (and worst) City memories. I don't think the TV switch was publicised until the day of the game, so I was all geared up to watch City vs Gornik and then they suddenly announced they'd be showing Leeds vs Chelsea instead. I remember storming out into the back garden and having a tantrum (I was 6) that eventually ended in getting my legs slapped. BBC bastards

I too really enjoyed that...

I am 68 and started watching City when Johnny Crossan lead them out of the 2nd Divison.

Two seasons later and we were champions.

The interview brought back many happy memories and I learnt loads of things from it.

Talk about Georgie Best did NOT dominate the programme AT ALL.

Tears in his eyes when talking apparently. Salt of the earth. A club with history and passion.
Excuse me but that adage is now an official TM of the Mid Cheshire M.C.S,C. Branch and can be seen quite clearly on our Branch Flag that sits proudly on SSL3 slap bang in the centre. Now unless you want a solicitors letter you should remove said wording. ;)
