IIRC Saddam started it as he was scared he would lose control of the south of Iraq to Iran. Also IIRC he was heavily backed by the USA and UK at the time.

I don't know how true this is but it was on the BBC news the other day. Hmm that there were massive wild fires along the southern boarder of Turkey. Which had actually been started by the Syrians to flush out the rebels (is that what we are calling them ?). Anyway the the Turks wanted to use their helicopters to dump water on the fires. Only for the Syrians to state that any helicopter going within five miles of the border would be shot down.

Now if that is true, along with the plane getting shot down, Turkey has every reason to be extremely pissed of. Maybe its just propaganda for our latest war, it does though look like Syria are really taking the piss ATM.

Never a truer statement. A war with Iran/Syria would be devastating, probably forcing the western friendly middle eastern nations to choose sides, not necessarily joining in the ground war but withdrawing oil etc. The question is would Iran fire on Israel or vice versa - that would cause all kinds of shit probably involving small anti personnel nukes being fired and I don't think either country likes to lose face by backing down.

Sometimes it's a fucker backing the bigger bully that is the USA than it's worth.
