Millwall 0 City 1 1987

I went to these games and the night game was the most nerve racking,I knocked off work and went for a pint on the Old Kent Road.
I was sat in the pub trying to look like I blended in,when an old cockney bloke said,'you're not from round here are you?',I replied what makes you say that.
He said'well you've got that paper upside down for a start',cue me supping up and doing one before I was sussed.
The Adcock goal one was a weird one,as we drove down and parked on a side street, got in the ground, the long silence as the ball went over the goalies head and then the cheers erupting.
Held back in the ground and then driving back home,a less uneventful game you couldn't imagine.

I was there. We were all crammed in that horrible little corner.

Can't say I was too worried by the threat of any violence or even noticed any threat.

It seemed a fairly routine awayday of the 70s and 80s to me, with lots of police, police dogs, general unpleasantness etc, but nothing sticks in my mind.

Went to the 1-0 game when Adcock scored on the special train and then a further three times. Even took my then girl friend one game but only as she was from Kent and had a southern accent so we could buy booze safely before the game!

Yep, I was there as a 15 year old on the official coaches - knew all the usual faces on the coaches before that game - that day there were 'a few heads' on their i'd never seen before.

That Adcock 'celebration' sticks in my head as fresh as if it was yesterday.

Went to the Old Den twice after that, the Mark Ward game and the Cup Replay defeat in midweek......and The New Den midweeker in '98.

Turnout can't have been more than 800-1000 or so but all we're lads and all between 16 and 40. Remember it kicking off in the escort and at the turnstiles but this was nothing compared with London bridge later.
Funny as fuck before the match as one minute it were pure verbals by both mobs then nex minute we'd chanted "Guuuuuuvnors" ...que the barriers goin over n' a nice little toe-toe ensuen in front of turnstiles.

Always remember once dibble restored some sort of near order Millwalls main lad at the time 'J' was stood fumin at us shoutin bout "guvnors fuckin guvnors you aint the fuckin guvnors MILLWALLS THE FUCKIN GOVERNORS" lmfao he then proceeded to tell their old bill "you can fuckoff n'all" ...hahaha splendid chap n' very angry

I remember going to a Millwwall game in the 80's but fucked if I know which one. Think we wore the claret and white striped shirt with the grandad collar, always loved that shirt. Did Clive Allen play for us and Sheringham score a late equaliser for them? Trevor Hurlock played for them because I remember us all singing 'Where's your caravan'. Seem to recall it was a night game or maybe I went there twice. I know there was all manner of stories about all their hardmen coming out for it. Harry the Dog and any Eastend Cockernee villain worth his salt would be there. Have to admit I was shit scared but there was no way you couldn't travel as it had to be done. Think it was the night game but I remember one of the coach drivers telling us somebody had shot at the coach windscreen with possibly an air rifle on the way out amongst the numerous bricks and bottles that had cracked various coach windows.

Crazy days, Remember them coming up to Maine Road years later and remember being stood on Piccadilly train station after the game just watching small fights with one on one breaking out everywhere whilst everyone just stood around watching. Most of their lads all wore biege baseball hats I recall.

I think the first time in years was the 1-0 in 87

However in 1990 we played three times at the Den.

FA Cup Replay 1-1 (I think Hendrie equalized for City)

FA Cup Second Replay 1-3 (Sherringham scored at least once and Paul Lake scored a cracking volley at our end. We were 2-0 down after ten minutes, but the Police were telling us outside the ground that the kick off had been delayed
I also remember this game because Ashley Ward came on as Sub, but was promptly subbed himself when it went 3-1. He refused to go off because he didn't think that substitutes could be substituted.

1-1 Vital relegation game. I think Mark Ward scored for City.

It was a bit strange because when they played us in 1990 we were both in the top division and they had bigger fish to fry.

However in 1998 we were their only big game and all hell broke loose

I was in with the Millwall fans that night. I went with my flatmate (a Leeds fan) who was meeting a footie journalist he knew at the ground. I thought I was going to blag a seat in with all the journos. My mate did, but I got bummed off and had mingle with the home support. I just remember freezing my tits off and not being able to breathe a word. For some reason I had persuaded myself that Lakey scored in the first tie, so thanks for putting me right on that. He had a monster of a game though, and I was convinced I was watching a future England captain. Went to the replay - in with City though this time - and yeah we were 2-0 before I got in the ground. Don't remember any bother either before or after.

Different story in 1998. Took my ex-girlfriend. She really enjoyed being kept in the ground for an hour after the game while Millwall went on the rampage outside.

I don't remember London Bridge being that big a deal after the game. I was only 20 or so,so was buzzing with adrenalin at the time, but looking back on it,I wouldn't say it was anything major. All the City lads there charged into the Millwall firm pushing them back up the steps, charged into them again, then swarms of truncheon wielding coppers appeared forcing City back down the platform. Over and done with in 30 seconds unless something else happened later on as we decided to jump on the nearest train into Charing Cross and head over to a gig at the Clarendon in Hammersmith.

After the 1-1 in 98 we were kept in the compound behind the stand for about an hour as Millwall fought with the coppers.
I remember Dennis Tueart giving a speech on a megaphone and when he finished somebody shouted:
“Dennis... Why are we crap?”

-- Tue Oct 23, 2012 6:18 pm --

After the 1-1 in 98 we were kept in the compound behind the stand for about an hour as Millwall fought with the coppers.
