millwall game at maine road that brought the banning of fans

City fans were attempting to smash up the coaches after the match, as I stood there watching it after coming out of the Kippax.

Didsbury Dave has it about right ..... although i was unaware of any later scrap with rags who had returned from Forest.

The battle inside the stadium resulted in the cavalry keeping Millwall inside the ground at the end as thousands of irate City fans massed on Claremont Road waiting for a confrontation .

The City fans were forced back up past the Sherwood pub towards Wilmslow Road by police who had dogs and others on horseback , before Millwall were let out and escorted , under heavy guard , back to town along Lloyd Street.

City fans in complete frustration started attackin' and looting businesses as they made their way to town along curry mile ......... i used to walk that way home back up to Belle Vue and i saw them do it ..... a few of them had replica shirts on , and were singin' city songs

Yeah this was correct, I was caught up in this with my mates that day (being 16 years of age and intrigued) it got a bit hairy as police came charging into the city contingent on the way past the Sherwood, remember seeing one unmarked police car getting ruined as it got trapped by the mob. We ended up getting isolated with a police dog heading to us ready to feast on us until a few local lads opened their garden gate and let us go through their house and out the other side....they ended up running with us (god knows why!) up to curry mile. Shops were getting looted as we arrived by both city fans and non city fans. Absolute mental night

Are there any pictures of this? I went to the next time we played Millwall when aways were banned.

City bit starts about 5 minutes in.

i drove to the game and got caught up behind millwalls mob being given a police escort outside the dentil hospital on upper lloyd st,top mob it was, funny thing was 2 tarts were at the front leadind the mob.bit strange.after the game city had their biggest mob out for years, check the video out and see city waiting for millwall on the corner of kippax st and claremont road,a week after. me the bread knife and the bin lids.went for a nose bag at the spicy hut in rusholme, and the owner said it was the city fans who wrecked rusholme not millwall, for what its worth, thats my sober and factual version.cheers brothers.

millwall have hated us since the late 80's when we took the piss at there place.i went down on the infamous coach that got completely wrecked by a large number of there boys.the coach driver ended up in hospital.we all travelled to london bridge with the rest of the lads after the game.was 17/18 at the time.a very interesting day out and one i will never ever forget.went to the new ground a few years ago for a night match when they kept us in the ground for an hour or so.you could hear there boys outside causing murders.somebody said they had overturned a bottle recycler.fancy putting one of them next to millwalls ground??????

Millwall brought a huge firm and got off the train at Stockport.

they had a scuffle with some Reds at Stockport station.

When they arrived in Mcr they were heavily escorted to the ground.

In the ground they threw seats and got them thrown back.

A massive City firm gathered outside after and had scuffles with the police, who succeeded in pushing them all the way back to Wilmslow Road. Millwall were kept in the grounmd then escored back down Lloyd Street.

City's lads made their way to town and smashed up some of the shops in Rusholme.

Attempts were made by both sides to meet but it never happened.

City later had a battle with United when they got back from Forest.

That's basically it.
I was sat right next to Millwall at the back of the North Stand. As soon as they got in the ground they took up the netting that provided a few seats empty segregation between the two sets of fans, and the stewards were powerless to stop them.

There was no City firm in the North Stand as it was all City season-ticket holders sat in their usual seats.

After Terry Cooke's goal, Millwall started throwing coins and seats, and at that point the Riot Police waded in. Very little fighting, between fans in the ground, just a very bad atmosphere.

No idea what happened in Rusholme after.

It kicked off after the first goal by Dickov, a complete bollock dropped by Spink letting in a tame pass back which Dickov barely scuffed.

Only members and ST holders were allowed in the City part of the North Stand.
