Milner and width

im not saying we shold play 4-4-2 with established wingers; infact i dont think we should, but having forward/attacking playes that can once in those positions deliver a decent ball into the box would help....

Ronaldo is a perfect example....started off as a winger but converted to a free floating forward...but when he does find himself in a wide position he can deliver a decent cross.....Its interesting as the one thing ive noticed about RVP is that he can also do it...you didnt really see him do it for arsenal but he has done for utd due to the fact that he is probably expected to work the flanks in his role for utd....rooney is the same...he can deliver a decent ball in and while i wouldnt sway either of those two for tevez/aguero neither of these 2 can do the same.....

so while we are looking at attacking options this summer i think it is an area/personnel we shuold be concentrating on to add more (plan b) to our attacking options.

bale would be the one but even IF spurs were to sell him he wont go to another prem team imho.....

I agree 100 percent with OP.

Jimmy will always put a solid shift in, but his final ball is too hit and miss to make him top class.

Case in point is last minute of first half of FA cup semi ....

It was a woeful cross when we had 4 against 2 situation.

Sorry but we need better players in wide midfield positions than we have. For sure Bale would be an good choice....I don't which Is his best position wide right or left ?

But we also need some blistering pace to scare teams......oh for another David White !

Unfortunately Whitey's second touch was sometimes a throw in!

A tad harsh ! He scored 17 goals from a wide position in top flight one season and put plenty of first time crosses in ( who can forget the cross to Hinchcliffe in the 5 - 1 ) that ended in goals.

Anyway I think you get my drift....a weighted ball from silva/Nasri inside the fullback would at present not panic a team as we don't have pace in those areas to exploit this.

Firstly this is not an anti milner thread. For the record he has been very good for us this season and especially in the last few games (i think the loss of milner had a huge negative effect vs spurs and was pone of the reasons we lost control of the midfield)

Milners best attributes are his work rate, defending and short passing game.

The biggest negative about him is his crossing ability..its very average at best (if im being honest its pretty woeful imho). He gets himself into some fantastic positions but all too often his final ball is poor.

Now not for one second do I think we should sell him.

But i do think that we need to bring in a player(s) this summer that has the same work ethic as JM but has a better final delivery and is more of an effective attacking player (Milner is extremely good defensively but is average in an attacking sense)......

The type of player(s) that we need is of the Ronaldo mould (not saying we are going to get someone of his level, but what I do mean is that we need someone who is of the same mould.....strong (not a walcott/sinclair type) quick with good delivery and can make a consistent contribution going forward.

I think milner will eventually succeed Barry at some point

If you think Milner's crossing is woeful, then what is Clichy's?

Neither players are wingers and I do agree we need one to play wide with excellent crossing. However, this may not be a good idea if, get rid of Dzeko as some posters want, there is no need for high crosses anymore as our front line of Augero, Tev, Silva, Nasri won't be able to out jump a 6ft + defender!

Milner is best when he fires low crosses across the front of goal - Take the assists at the swamp last year, the one to Nasri at Spurs for example.
That's the thing though... i can't be the only one that thought his cross to Nasri v Spurs was a load of shite? A simple ball, just needed to be rolled along the ground into his path, yet Jimmy wellies it about a yard in the air straight at him. Nasri did extremely well to score from that cross. It was nowhere near where he would have wanted, and expected, it.

Milner is fantastic but i agree with the OP, his crossing is woeful. Play Jimmy in the engine room and get some proper wide men in.
