Missing out on Champions League.

I've been thinking, something I don't particularly enjoy doing, a lot recently and I honestly don't think that missing out on the Champions League would be as bad as some of our local Nostrodamus' seem to think it would be.

1)Money
Perhaps the biggest reason we seek to compete is the money that comes with it. But let's face it, we have the richest owners in sport and I'm sure it'd be but a small hindernance. Besides its not like it will affect us till next summer, if anything it'll just push us to spend even bigger this summer to give us maximum time to rebuild and integrate before taking it on again.

2)Player Attraction.
It has been claimed that if we don't get CL football we will struggle to attract the biggest names in football. Our response to this should be 'Fuck them' if a player turns down a club for the sole reason that they aren't in the champions league at that moment then they aren't a player who we should be trying to sign. It's oft' thrown around that we as a team lack fight & heart in recent years. This will only be worse if we sign players that are only interested in superfluous competitions and not potential of the club they could be playing for. Any player that cannot see or prepare for his long term career is not one I would want to play for us.
Let it be known I am not saying we are the biggest or the best attraction in football but if a player cannot see the potential of playing for City in the coming years they are a fool.

3) The New Dawn
Now, this section may upset a few of you but hear me out.
The spine of our team is aging. Once, it was a spine that may not have been one full of the flashiest names but was one that people feared. Sadly, the unceasing March of time and constant injuries has taken its toll on us. The rigid backbone is now one more resembling a scoliosis patient and we all know it's time for a rebuild. Silva is aging and hadn't found his legs this season. Zaba has slowed, been injured and is showing worse judgement this year. Yaya, although still a towering brute, isn't fearful anymore, his legs are waning and he has been ineffectual for large parts of this season. If not this season then he will go very soon. Kompany is still one of the best CB in the world and akin to Churchill in his leadership ability. But it's a simple fact we cannot pin all of our hopes on someone who we have no assurances will be fit again next season.
Whatever way you look at it, and with Pep coming in we have one hell of a job rebuilding our team for the future. It's simply logical that time out of a very demanding competiton spanning thousands of miles worth of travel mere days before games might be very beneficial in the coming transitional period.

They never wanted us in it anyway so fuck them.

At any rate, we're not out of it yet so let's keep hoping we can turn it around and finish strongly, but worst case scenario it might not be as bad as we fear.

Has FFP been scrapped? No.

Losing £50m of CL revenue means we have something like maybe £150m less to spend on transfers, taking amortization and wages into account. I'd say that was a pretty big deal.

The fact that we are even discussing the prospect is a disgrace. Pellers should have gone months ago. It was clear as day we were treading water at best.

For the progress of the club it would be a disaster, Pep is here for 3 years and his remit will be to at least do much better in it, we can't do that if we aren't in the competition. No on paper it wouldn't be the worse thing but we shouldn't be striving for mediocrity, we should be in the competition and we should be doing well in it.

It's fine wanting to win the league every year but the best players and Pep himself won't want to come here just for that. Everyone is excited by potential players like Messi this summer and in the future but why would he come to a club finishing 5th and not even in Europe's biggest competition?

We shouldn't just be settling for the league because we have won it now and it is time to move on to bigger things on the priority list.

I see it differently, for me it wouldn't of been the worst thing missing out on the LEAGUE this year if it meant a semi final at least in the Champions League. Finishing worse than 4th however would be a backwards step no matter how we do elsewhere unless we win the Champions League which with this Barcelona side is going to be highly unlikely..

Agree totally mate, what it may mean is a reduced transfer budget which suits me fine , the test of this club is how we use some of the great quality coming through the EDS and under 18's.
I would gladly see a transitional season where we put real foundations in place bedding in youngsters that will bear us fruits long after Pep has gone.

This is the biggest season to date coming up since we were taken over for me.

You realise the alternative to CL is EL? So it wouldn't be time out from a demanding competition spanning thousands of miles worth of travel mere days before games; in fact it would be worse as it turns Tuesday/Wednesday into Thursday - for some reason that seems more detrimental to teams as we've seen in the past.

Agree with the general point though, wouldn't be a disaster, I think Thursday night football could affect League prospects which is a good enough reason to avoid it. But worst of all is who we'd be giving the CL spot to, if it was West Ham then fine, not so bad - but to gift 4th spot to a truly awful United side? Not for me.

Good point lad, but as I've been told by the media recently the EL is where we want to be anyway as that's the true European competiton of dreams so I'll take it!

As for the second part, fuck United and everything they stand for the absolute scum. It would boil my piss if we miss out on Europe in favour for them. It'd be unforgivable
