Good debate.

Neville is spot on. 4-4-2 has been criticized too much. I always knew that it is a formation that can be used against teams who flood the midfield , e.g. Barcelona and Bayern Munich. You simply have to defend properly and when you have the ball you must use it intelligently.

When we played at the Allianze Arena, we actually used a 4-4-2 when defending. It is when we had the ball that we changed to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1.

It angers me that I was in total agreement with Gary Neville. He is a different person as a pundit.

Watch us batter them 4-1 this season and he is too bloody impartial. I don't get how he manages it considering he is red through and through, It's hard to hate him

It's not so much how many you have in midfield as who you have. I'd put Milner in with Yaya & Fernandinho and put Silva in a floating or more advanced role.

What about Navas on the break? Especially against Barca when we might not have as much of the ball

These must be the conundrums Manuel has every day of his working week.

Maybe bring him on as a sub to stretch the opposition as they get tired.

It was a great discussion, and Carragher was backing up what I've said in the Pellegrini and Dzeko / Negredo threads. 442 against elite European teams will get you found out as you'll get outnumbered in midfield.

Neville made some great points in his analysis, that we should stick to out preferred shape, and the United "didn't do too badly playing that shape for 15 years."

What Neville forgot to mention was just how badly United got outclassed by Barcelona in 2 European finals by blindly sticking to that system.

Personally I think we have got so many goals in us at home that I think we should stick to 442 at home to Barca. There is always the threat we will get outclassed like when Bayern came to the Etihad. But if we are to stand any chance of getting through, we have to have a couple of goals lead going in to the second leg.

In the Nou Camp though, I think if we stick to 442 it is suicide. I think they will completely outnumber us in midfield and they could end up with 75% of the ball, making it a near impossible task to stop them from scoring.

Everyone has their opinion, but I stand by mine that we look brilliant playing 442 in England, we look like we'll score goals for fun. But against the top teams in Europe, we'll get found out playing that way, particularly away from home.

Beat me to it, that's exactly what I'd do.

Milner brings an industry to the side that I think we'll need against Barcelona, he made everything work in the Bayern game in Germany.
