I'm not sure Pep does backups other than very specialist positions like goalkeeper.I am sure after 3 pre season games Pep is unconvinced by Phillips even as back up.
He does rotation together with positional variability.
In the last couple of years Walkers replacements at right back have included Fernandinho and Lewis both of whom were midfielders and Stones and Akanji both of whom were centre halves.
Cancelo played little there who was probably pur 'back up' right back.
Aguero was replaced by midfielders and wingers generally as false 9's.
Bernardo,Ake and Lewis appear more often at left back than Gomez who was apparently bought as one. Delph and Zin were never left backs etc etc.
