Money or the shirt ?

It´s clear that we´ll have to pay an extra premium due to our recent unsuccessful past but the dosh is really the means to an end - for the player it´s a sweetener, the icing on the cake - first we have to sell the dream, the challenge - the project if you will. Without the vision there´s nothing - a player has to be excited about coming to us coz if he isn´t he´s not the player we are looking for imo
Yes, you've nailed it.

This whole thing about money , football & players makes my blood boil!

Players are professionals, end of. They are not fans. Some may play for their boyhood teams like Rooney at Everton but look where he ended up, in Hell with the Devil at the Swamp! They have a short if lucrative career so there is nothing wrong with them trying to earn the best that they can, nothing at all. Now we are fans on the other hand, are here for life or so we should be. These guys, the pros owe us nothing, we owe them nothing. They get their rewards financially and we hopefully get a winning team. I would love players to be loyal to our club for life but that is just far to simplistic, and it's a two way street. Richard Dunne is a perfect example, look at things from his perspective. He has performed and been voted player of the season 4 years on the bounce. One dodgy season how the fans turned on him. Then the witchunt begins, or the club decide he is surplus to requirements. Where's the frickin loyalty there? From Dunne's point of view he gives his all , then gets dumped by the club and abused by sections of the fans. Two way street. So why shouldn't players do the best for themselves that they can for a short time?

The players joining us are already multi millionaires, it's NOT just about the frickin money. It's ambition. Take a look at where the Sheikh is taking this club, to some unimagined glorious future. Fact , as the fat Spanish Waiter would say. Who wouldn't want to be a part of it. Take a look at his palace on the OS, wouldn't you want to be in his team? So players coming to us is because of the WHOLE package, the status , the esteem it will bring, and it WILL

I'm sick of complete fucking idiot fans of other teams spouting the tired, boring fucking stupid mantra, "only going for the money" or "Man City mercenaries". Absolute stupid, petty, jealous statements.

As for the team not gelling together, well if you stick stars together then surely they will shine, especially as the future is bright, the future is blue.

Amen,

I will now go away quietly before exploding into a spontaneous combustion enduced fireball that will light up South Manchester killing any rag bastard within proximity in the process.

First money then the shirt. Doesn't bother me that they've come for the money as I know they'll see we're more than your average set of supporters and more than a normal football club.

yes the players are joining for the money, but they're joining the richest club in the world in the best league . . . which provides an attractive prospect, with a real chance of prolonged success.
if a team in a lower league had our wealth the players we've brought would never consider it as they don't offer success in the forseable future, which we DO!

As a lifelong City fan I'm happy with the signings made of recent. Time I reckon for our time in the sun once again, we've been in the shade to bloody long.

But let's be realistic about matters shall we?

RSC, Tevez,Barry and whoever else Hughes manages to sign have signed for the cash, pure and simple. They, the players, may say they're coming because they believe City are on the up but make no mistake about it, If we hadn't been able to offer them the wages do you honestly think they'd have signed for us?

Of course not.

To be honest with you I don't give a shit whether they play for us because they believe in City or because of the dosh we pay them. Just as long as they do the job on the field that'll suit me.

Something else: We are all expecting great things next season and I certainly hope our expectations come true---but what if they don't?

Suppose the players signed can't gel with each other, suppose their individual styles of play don't suit each other, what then?.

A harbinger of doom? not me, just being sensible and pragmatic so please don't shoot the messenger

I find it ironic that you say "Don't shoot the messenger" because by saying that, you're saying don't blame me, I'm just passing a message on from the original person who is giving the doom and gloom. But in fact you ARE the person passing on the doom and gloom, so you're not the messenger at all, so that's right out of context. The buck stops with you and your view.

Now that's out of the way, another reason I believe you're wide of the mark is that you say that if those players hadn't been offered those sums of money to come, they wouldn't have. Well that's stating the bleeding obvious isn't it? And I don't think is in the right context either. It's BECAUSE we have the money, potential and ambition that we CAN pay such wages and fees, so that's a bit of a snowball effect and players will see that we're a club on the up.

I think the real question is how much they buy into the project and how much is just down to the wages. If it were me, as a professional, I would want to play for a club that not only paid well, but was also going to win things, and if I was one of the players that brought a trophy back to Man City after 30 odd years, that's going to make me look very good indeed. As a player who has won things before, a new challenge is surely the best way to test yourself even further.

So whilst I take on board your musings, and sort of see where you're coming from, I believe that you're insulting the players [albeit limited] intelligence and professionalism to a certain extent.

Well, those players are leaving already established clubs where they can compete for the biggest trophies and, in fact, win them now instead of the foreseeable future, as you put it. Not to mention that considering how competitive the PL is, there's no telling how long that journey to success will take, let alone how long it will take to accomplish something on the European stage.

They're coming for the money and it's ok, every top club bought success to a certain degree and you're not the first to attempt that and most likely won't be the last. The times of playing for the shirt are long gone, anyway and considering that a club's loyalty to a player is also non-existent nowadays why should anyone be surprised.
