Edson Arantes do Nascimento is the most iconic/greatest player, and he was part of the most iconic/greatest team ever - Brazil 1970.

Over on these shores its Beckham. No way is he the best player, but he certainly established himself as a Icon.

For the next generation of people, growing up playing as these icons on videogames and watching them live on Satellite Tv it's Lionel Messi for me.

You see Messi is the best player of his generation without doubt but to me he is not really an iconic player. He is fairly non-descript. I suppose its your definition as he is the current face of football.
