Most Iconic footballer

Depends how you define icon .

I'm my opinion itd be beckham.

If you asked a varied mix of 10,000 people including both genders all ages and a variety of nationalities to name 1 footballer he 'd absolutely piss it.

Doesn't make him the 'best' player though before any of you start .

It was defined in the thread title. "Most Iconic Footballer" it says. If it said "Footballer who sells the most products" or "Footballer who appears on most posters these days" it may well be Beckham. An iconic image of a footballer is surely career defining moments. The only iconic image of Beckham is after his equaliser against Greece at home in a qualifying match.

Diego Maradona with the fucking World Cup in his hands is worth a million pictures of that thick twat with his latest haircut.

Of all time. Conversation in the office today. Obviously a different argument than best player of all time.

Rag says its Cantona without a doubt and will not have any other suggestion. He says if Tarrantino was to pick any footballer for one of his films it would be him.

Ans I do see where he is coming from - however Maradonna is not only the best for me but all the most iconic. The "Hand of God" must be the most talked about goal, he was a bad boy on and off the pitch and in bed with the mafia, drugs, women and yet won titles and world cups with average teams around him.

Oh dear. They really are full aren't they? At best Cantona would have a bit part in a Guy Ritchie film as a character called 'French Alan' or something wank like that.

I agree with OP, Maradonna for me too. Be it International or Club he seemed to be an unstoppable force.

Online dictionary defines icon as

'One who is the focus of much attention and devotion'

I'm sorry mate but beckham shits all over maradonna in both those categories across the globe. Argentina probably the only exception.

Its David Beckham hands down, people who have no clue or interest in football know everything about David Beckham....Brand Beckham will be worth a billion one day.

Pains me to say but it is Beckham.

Balo may challenge him one day if everything clicks into place.

Maradona. Whether that's because he was the most famous player when I was young or simply because.... Maradona!

icon? more like bell end. a cheat, a druggie and a fucking disgrace to the game.

He's an icon. He's not everybodys cup of tea but it is what it is.

Diego Maradona was a fucking amazing footballer.

This day and age , Messi . most popular is Beckham but I cannot for the life of me think of one iconic footballing moment apart from his sixth or seventh free kick versus greece and being sent off versus Argentina , sorry his goal from the half way line versus wimbledon .

Messi is the closest thing to Maradonna , both would of walk into any team , Messi is the perfect Professional footballers , unplayable Ronaldo is close to him but is not as good a model footballer . Aguero `s last minute goal to win the league pisses all over Beckham`s contribution to the beautiful game , to me anyhow.
