Most Memorable Boxing Day City Match

Away at Sheffield U in 2006, Samaras heading off the line and getting the flick-on for Ireland's edge of box finish. Had a great away run of form around then to intimately keep us up.

Boxind Day 88 Stoke away, Old Victoria ground. 12000 City, 10000 bananas. Such fun: )

pitty we lost

but the joy for me was andy dibble running out with my 6 foot banana under his arm hahaha
went down to maine road to pick up tickets for the game in the week. bought a 6ft banana from town on the same day. so had it blown up waiting for tickets ??? next thing all the players was running back from training at platt lane and andy dibble spotted my banana and shouts over were you get that from the club shop nope all sold out ??

so next thing am out of the line up for tickets talking to dibble. i was making a deal ?? i asked for a shirt but back then it was like rocking horse droppings and city and the players got told not to give shirts away so a no go for the top
dibble said i would swap my boots but they was wrong size for me and also battered ? so did the deal on a pair of dibble gloves and he runs off and all the other players was laughing

Yes as others have said, Newcastle at home, when Colin made his comeback game. The noise and the atmosphere was tremendous, once Colin came out for the second half, and probably the best ever. Score 0-0 HT, final score 4-0 for City. We all had a tier in our eye, but probably the best game I ever went to on Boxing Day.

Think you mean “ ultimately “ although “ intimate” and keeping things up does have a certain ring to it

Mine would be the 1-3 at Newcastle in 2010. Me, my dad & brother drove up & it was a proper christmasy fixture, floodlights & snow. I remember we got off to a flying start with 2 quick goals and it was just a day to remember, i also remember on the way out a load of us had a snowball fight with Newcastle fans which was fun until it turned serious between a few.

I've always felt the planners/tv schedulers have missed a bit of a trick in not making Boxing Day Derby Day

Just think very little inconvenient travel for the fans (scum apart) and would make for a crackling atmosphere - non covid times obviously

when you think its all about the viewing figures worldwide you would have thought Sky, BT Amazon etc would be falling over themselves to screen all of the big hitters one after another on the big day - really tie in their target audience across the globe

obviously some of the mid table teams would be scrabbling around a bit but this year you would still have Villa v west brom, Palace v Brighton on top of City v rags, red v blue dippers Arsenal v spuds

surely in terms of the 'product' these games would produce a far better spectacle and thus increase demand

1977 v Newcastle we won 4-0 and I Certain Mr Mr Bell came on in the Second Half
The place exploded and I recall he nearly scored at the North Stand
I was off my seat as I thought it was in ,only an inch or so above the bar
2002 vs Aston villa
sat behind Johnny Marr in the Platt Lane End.

Astonishing day. Amazing crowd reaction.

With Boxing Day just over, it may interest those of us who like to delve into the past of our great club to consider the last pre-war Boxing Day, namely 1938 of course.

We played Tranmere at Prenton Park on the 26th of Dec (we would normally have played on Xmas Day in those days, but in 1938 it fell on a Sunday when football was not allowed) .with the return at Maine Road on the 27th.

City won 9-3 away on the Boxing Day, then the next day we won 5-2 at home. So 14 goals in two days! We had a striker called Jack Milsom, all but forgotten now, who bagged four goals at Tranmere, and three more in the return next day. Seven goals (including two hat-tricks) in two days by one payer...is this a record? Milsom had been signed from Bolton and only played two seasons for us, but had a decent scoring record of 22 goals in 34 League & Cup games.

Has any player had a better two days over the festive season. (Apologies for boring the younger BMs, but I think it is a bit of our history we should be aware of and revel in)
And no, I do NOT remember it personally......
