Most momentous International event in your lifetime?

Which one?

the john paul visit in Galway racetrack, i was at.

I worked in Phoenix park and RDS gig in the last visit.
I stood in the Popemobile in Leyland transport museum last week, pretending to be the Pope waving to the imaginary crowds. (Actually it was a couple of nine year old schoolkids)

Definitely 9/11. I was in school and I remember it vividly.

We had a family holiday in New York 6 months later too. Was amazing how quickly the rebuild operation was conducted. New Yorkers don’t fuck about.
Fella I know was there when it happened. Couple of blocks away.

That, Diana death, Space Shuttle blowing up twice.

Depending on how old people are, there are some events which will be discussed in thousands of years. They include:

- The first nuclear bomb
- humans travelling faster than the speed of sound
- Space exploration/moon landing
- Chernobyl
- Fukushima
- the invention of plastic
- the invention of AI
- COVID 19

There’s probably loads more but they are the biggest things that have happened in the last 100 years.

the warrington ira bomb for me.my wife was due to go shopping with her sister and i was working away.couldnt get hold of her for hours then found out her and her sister had gone to st helens and left there phones at home

It was Covid until last week when Mad Eye Screamer voted for Dylan over the Smiths...How soon is now and Depeche Mode fans took the huff in finishing 5th on the best song of all time.

Heysel watching it live on TV.
Hillsborough I was in Blackpool with a mate on the piss came back to get changed at the hotel and it was on tv bloody heartbreaking.
Berlin Wall I was stationed in Germany what a piss up we had that week with the Germans.
911 in work watching it unfold on tv unreal watching that second plane hit.
Manchester Arena sat in work that night, one of the lads had to rush to the arena his wife and daughter had just walked out the doors when the bomb went off, we waited all night waiting to be sent down but the cunts in charge bottled it.
COVID still can’t believe that happened if I’m honest only 3 years ago seems a lifetime ago

From a family standpoint it’s the fall of the Berlin Wall. Changed everything.

The three football tragedies Bradford, Heysel and Hillsborough along with the Iranian Embassy, first Space Shuttle disaster, Chernobyl, Reagan & Pope assassination attempts and finally the first Gulf War and 9/11 are the events that have the strongest memories for me. Definitely a bias towards eighties events and when the realisation hit that the world is dreadful at times and will always throw up new tragedies.

Cambodia, Ethiopia, Waco, Oklahoma City bombing, Tiananmen Square, Manchester Arena, Airey Neave, Mountbatten, Ross McWhirter - loads of things that stick in the mind.

Iraq's invasion of Kuwait - Was part of the 1st British troops to go to Saudi in preparation of liberating Kuwait.

Pretty comprehensive list. Though I was alive for all but JFK the first ones to really impinge on my consciousness were those in the 80s though I have some recollection of the 72 Olympics attack and I also remember Louise Brown as major news. As vivid as my memories of some of those international events are, they are not as vivid as the 7/7 attacks as I witnessed the bus bombing in Tavistock Square. That entire day, which was surreal in a number of ways, is still pretty much etched in my memory.
