Most Overrated Player to Play for City

This thread should have more controversy, given how being overrated works. So in the spirit of that I'll throw a player into the mix: Fernandinho.

Has he been a fantastic player? Of course. Is he a City legend? He should very much be considered one.

But you can still be brilliant and overrated (eg Scholes). Fernandinho just isn't on the level as the likes of Aguero, Silva, De Bruyne, or Kompany. He's a clever, disciplined, all rounded midfielder but he's neither a truly world class defender, or attacker, or midfield general like the players above. In the same way we loved De Jong for his efforts defensively in an attacking side, we really love Fern for his efforts in these super attacking teams he's been in (Plus his growth under Pep has been a great watch).

He was to Touré what De Jong was to Barry. Just as important as Yaya, but not as good.

To be clear, I'm not saying he's anything less than a great player. Just overrated.

You see, I'd have called it the other way around. Greatly appreciated with us but grossly under-rated outside of City.

Wholly agree. Kinkladze always seemed to have trouble controlling his weight. He was, I’d heard, rather fond of Georgian Khachapuri (cheese bread)!

Although I think he's overrated by us, I agree that for non blues he's definitely underrated. As is and has been every City player over the past decade outside of De Bruyne, Touré, Laporte, and maybe Kompany.
 
Wilfried Bony must have been the worst player i have ever seen play in our colours, waste of space and lazy as hell. Was never high rated but every point is overrated.

Overrated is referring to the difference between someone's perceived playing ability and their actual playing ability. Nobody thinks Fernandinho is as good as De Bruyne but he is certainly not "overrated".

Stevie Wonder could see what was going to happen that afternoon. I blame Mario for rank stupidity, a not uncommon characteristic in him (remember the stupid back heel attempt in that pre season friendly in the states?). Dzeko and, more pertinently, Mancini went spare at him. But I also blame Mancini for the farce at the Emirates. He should have seen what was likely to happen, and subbed Mario off.

Benarbia scored 3 goals and had 6 assists in 33 Premier League games, at the age of 34.

Kinkladze managed 4 goals and 5 assists in 37 Premier League games, aged 22. 12 years his junior.

I'm not doubting Kinkladze's natural ability. He had all the talent in the world. He just never made the most of it.

I'm sure someone will be along in a moment to pitch the 'well, he was surrounded by shite' argument. This is true to an extent, but his move to Ajax diminishes the validity of this point.

He failed fairly miserably there, in a poor league, surrounded by very good players (the De Boer twins, Danny Blind, Edwin Van Der Sar, Jari Limanen, Richard Witschge etc).

As I say, all the talent in the world and great to watch on top form, but significantly overrated in my opinion.

Nah, it more or less sealed his fate in our starting line up from then on in. The rest, they say, is history.

Mancini’s mishandling of Balotelli arguably cost him his job too.

Like many kids from average backgrounds, Mario had more money than he knew what to do with and had little respect for the game that made him. Rather than settle down with a nice girl, I understand he had a crew of mates and paid for everything.

He was just an attention seeker by the end.
