Most Overrated Player to Play for City

This is a cloudy memory but I'm sure I was told a the time that there was a big bust up at the time about the signing. Maybe it was David BErnstein who didn't want him and ended up resigning on the back of the bust up. If that is true the it explains Keegan's perseverence.
I thought the row was over Robbie Fowler.

Harsh but fair. I suspect deep down many of our supporters would give similar appraisals. Players like Kinky capture the imagination though; the type of player who brings intangible qualities that can't be measured in figures alone.
I thought he was brilliant. Right player at the wrong time.

He was old and at the end of his career. Seaman was far worse. Isaksson was also far worse.
True but those two have a bit more goodwill from me for not being rag cunts

I don’t remember Isaksson being that bad but maybe my memory has faded and we had bigger problems at the time and I spent most of the Pearce era asleep.

Can’t help but feel that the system made players of his and Javi Garcia’s ilk look rubbish though under Pellegrini.

Think kind of like how you say at the end there the system made him and before him Javi Garcia look worse than they probably were having to play in a two with Yaya who had a liscense to do what he want.

Fernandinho made the best of that role but it was ultimately only when Pep came in we saw the best of Fernandinho too.

People always forget we'd already seen some of Fernandinho's best from before Fernando even arrived he was immense in his first season, it was because of Fernandinho's sheer excellence in his debut season that the likes of Silva and Nasri had so much confidence, his energy and defensive ability enabled Yaya Toure to have that spectacular season in 2013/14.

There's a case to say Fernandinho was that good in his very first season, that he honestly papered over some major cracks with how much of a quick fix he was.

We regressed after we purchased Fernando because he just wasn't right for us, Javi Garcia was an important squad player in the season we won the title under Pellegrini, because he'd come on the last 20 minutes and calm things down and keep our team composed from the back.

I understand why Javi Garcia didn't have his fans with the lack of pace but he offered something that'd be appreciated more under Pep, people hated Javi Garcia because he wasn't as mobile or as fiery as NDJ then they were quite relieved when we got rid, there was a lot of excitement for his replacement Fernando who was much worse for me he just didn't suit us at all.

I firmly believe had we signed a better defensive midfielder with energy, or even a ball playing centre mid with energy to keep Fernandinho deeper like in his brilliant debut season, then Fernandinho wouldn't have had to cover Fernando's mistakes for the next 2-3 years.

Fernandinho was honestly immense in his first season it gets forgotten about, because he got back to those levels under Pep but 13/14 is probably one of his 3 best seasons here.

Overrated by definition = people view the ability and output higher than it actually was. I give you Georgi Kinkladze, Relegated from the premier league , couldn't stand out in the championship, failed in the farmers league at Ajax then couldn't get a game at derby county, Yet lives off one goal and most fans rate him as a Pele / Maradona level player and it was the "team he was in that was the problem" , and yes I watched him live my first season ticket was the year he joined. He was no better than Eyal Berkovic who is rated several level below him by most fans.
I saw his first game at Maine Road (v. Spurs?) Early on he got the ball in the middle of the pitch and put a pass 30 yards to the edge of the penalty area that took the breath away as well as taking out three of the opposition. Unfortunately no other City player could read what he was doing. Some would say that was the story of his time at City, but the wonder goal v. Southampton apart I agree with your assessment.
Not as good as Benarbia for me.

It's Gerry Creany or Buster Phillips as overated by everyone but failed

fans wise though it will be controversial this, but it's kinky, great talent and I love him, but we hyped him way much more than he was (some still do thinking he would make the treble team)

True he is a super rag and never gives us any credit. So yes he does get minus points for that.

Isaksson was highly rated. Juventus signed him as a 17 year old with the plan to replace Buffon. He did really well in the french league and had loads of caps for Sweden. It did not take long for him to lose his place to a much younger keeper.

Seaman made Immel look agile.

Leroy Sane - Thought he was a very good player for us and maybe not the most overrated but definitely very overrated for me by a lot of our fan base.

As many games where he looked disinterested as he had good ones. Bit of an attitude on him as well, had prime Silva and KDB laying things on a plate for him. Particularly those little through balls into the box from Silva in behind the fullback.

Sterling much more impactful player for me but you’d rarely see him get the respect he deserves from Blues, even now. Sane gets away with flirting away and forcing a move to Bayern and everyone looks fondly back at his time, heard Sterling get booed last time I saw him play against us.

In contrast to the underrated player thread.

I’ll start with my nomination in recent times.. Nigel De Jong.

Everyone loved him when he came in, because we were bang average and like Zabaleta, he threw his body into everything.
The main difference between those two being, one improved their footballing ability and nous to match their dedication.

De Jong left ground too often, mainly because his positional sense was shit, and he was covering his own arse. I used to cringe when he would go crunching in, sometimes with unnecessary force, and he cost a few players a few years of their careers. If he had played for anyone else, we’d have bemoaned what a dirty player he was.

Oh and his chant was absolutely awful.
Dont care.He was part of the move that set Sergio up for the winner.

Buster Phillips , signed him for a £500k and managerial genius Alan Ball said he would be the first £10m footballer , f*ck me we have put up with some shit

This is going to be a bit controversial and I apologise in advance for blaspheming but the most OVERRATED city player is Zaba for me…I love the guy but he was a terrible right back

Richards. Positional sense was shocking, his technical ability was gash and could hardly even run by the time he'd bulked up.

Corluka. Couldn't take to him, too casual and too much of a fanny. That said, he looked good doing it (by 'it', I mean fuck all), bloody gorgeous looking bloke.

Robinho. Took the plunge to get us on the world stage (albeit because he'd burned all Madrid bridges and had nowhere else to go) but he was a lazy, timid and moody bastard. Perhaps because he was 'too good' for us. But not good enough to put the team on its back like Tevez, Yaya etc.

Dare I say it...Balotelli. Wasted potential, constantly walking a tightrope when he was on the pitch and looked like he could never be arsed.

And finally a controversial one...Pigeoninho. Liability.
