Last minute penalty winner by bury or Stockport at home at Maine Road. Fuck me that stung
Thought we played Everton Boxing Day 1968. It was my first gameMost painful? Well, it was the first of many, I guess. My 9th happy christmas didn't last long:-
Jeff Astle, Boxing day 1968.
This 9 year old boy was in the 44k+ crowd.
City were 2nd in the league.
Lost 3-2 at home and Jeff Astle scored the winner in the 88th minute.
I thought, "That's it; we'll never win anything!" after we'd been on the up for 2 years of my City supporting career.
What a Christmas come down that was! Just looked up the details - probably lost coz King Colin didn't play.
Apparently, it was John Clay's second and last start for City and also Stan Horne's last one as well, according to Stat City, but another website has the teams listed as follows, with Stan Bowles in there instead of Clay.
Feeling a bit "Don Maclean" - I can't remember if I cried but I remember feeling devastated.
And, what about that referree's name - Mr R Spittle!!! Anyway:-
attendance 44,897
scorers
City Lee(60), Summerbee(75)
West Brom Astle(28 & 88), Brown(37)
Ref R Spittle
City Mulhearn, Book, Pardoe, Horne, Heslop, Oakes, Lee, Bowles(or was it John Clay), Summerbee, Young, Coleman – sub Cheetham(45)
West Brom Osborne, Colquhoun, Williams, Brown, Talbot, Fraser, Krzywicki, Kaye, Astle, Hope, Clark – sub Lovett(76)
Ref R Spittle? probably a scouser. Most painful? Well, it was the first of many, I guess. My 9th happy christmas didn't last long:-

You're right sorry - my bad. It was Boxing Day 1967 when I was 9, I meant to say - the 67/68 season when we went on to fantastically win the league for only the 2nd time in history.Thought we played Everton Boxing Day 1968. It was my first game
I don't know. I was sitting in the north stand at the time and thought when I watched it our fete was sealed. Was that Charlton at home? Lost 4-1? Think it was Huckerby's debut.
Chucked a full can of lager into the garden when that went in !Owen. Ugh.
