Most painful goal in a City game

Most painful? Well, it was the first of many, I guess. My 9th happy christmas didn't last long:-

Jeff Astle, Boxing day 1968.
This 9 year old boy was in the 44k+ crowd.
City were 2nd in the league.
Lost 3-2 at home and Jeff Astle scored the winner in the 88th minute.
I thought, "That's it; we'll never win anything!" after we'd been on the up for 2 years of my City supporting career.

What a Christmas come down that was! Just looked up the details - probably lost coz King Colin didn't play.

Apparently, it was John Clay's second and last start for City and also Stan Horne's last one as well, according to Stat City, but another website has the teams listed as follows, with Stan Bowles in there instead of Clay.

Feeling a bit "Don Maclean" - I can't remember if I cried but I remember feeling devastated.
And, what about that referree's name - Mr R Spittle!!! Anyway:-

attendance 44,897

scorers
City
Lee(60), Summerbee(75)
West Brom Astle(28 & 88), Brown(37)

Ref R Spittle

City Mulhearn, Book, Pardoe, Horne, Heslop, Oakes, Lee, Bowles(or was it John Clay), Summerbee, Young, Coleman – sub Cheetham(45)

West Brom Osborne, Colquhoun, Williams, Brown, Talbot, Fraser, Krzywicki, Kaye, Astle, Hope, Clark – sub Lovett(76)
Thought we played Everton Boxing Day 1968. It was my first game

Ref R Spittle? probably a scouser.

There have been a few with the rags that hurt a lot. That Owen goal at the swamp was fucking awful.

Ben Watson's winner for Wigan probably hurt the most. I had missed our win against Stoke and the Aguero moment as I was in Australia for a couple of years. The Wigan game was my first chance to see City lift a trophy in my lifetime...until that goal.

Luton at home the infamous day in 1983 . Total fluke really from Antic and I still feel sick in my stomach thinking about it . Took city over 20 years to truly recover from that

Luton there's nothing else to be said

Yep, agreed .....

Although the goal we had ruled out on the final whistle at Derbys old Baseball ground still rankles with me too .... i bet it still rankles with the cat i had in those days too, i chased him all over the fkn house after that!

Obscure anecdote….. John Clay knocked on our door once selling City lottery type things.

Agree with Ricky Villa, Owen and even a mention for the Watson OG against Liverpool…….but Kenny Hibbett in the league cup final…..my first memory of losing at Wembley.

I used to avoid putting the radio on towards the end of a City game because the opposition would inevitably score as soon as I did.

We were playing Birmingham I think in the old 1st division. I tuned into BBC just before 5pm to hear the final score, confident that the game must have finished, only to hear us concede in about the 8th minute of extra-time from a deflected cross (possibly an own-goal?).

We had managed to lose to a team that had not had one shot on target, and to this day I still can’t check the score on BBC radio or website without a feeling of dread.

There`s so many ! But i`ll opt for Luton in 83 and Trevor Cherry`s goal against us in the FA Cup 5th round in 77 .

You're right sorry - my bad. It was Boxing Day 1967 when I was 9, I meant to say - the 67/68 season when we went on to fantastically win the league for only the 2nd time in history.
Happy days. Good while they lasted. Even sweeter when they returned 30-40 years later.
I'll die a happy man after what's gone on in recent years.

Painful & funny at the same time, Jamie pollocks stunning effort, just sadly in the wrong goal, my Nephews first game, I said to him if you want to be a blue this is what you need to get used to,
Thankfully its not been to bad in the last few years :-)
